Whoever it was that negative repped me, thanks
I hope nobody "disapproves of my comments" on this thread because I think that Chinese would be hard to learn for an english native speaker. I actually have a lot of respect for any chinese speaker and was just commenting on my general impression and hoping to gain more information. If anyone else was offended, feel free to tell me. If the person that did neg me would like to explain further, that would be most appreciated.
Awww...don't worry. I've been in the same situation as well, so don't feel bad. It happened for no apparent reason, and the person didn't leave a name or anything. I don't even know why the person did that. It was so random.

How exactly are you learning Mandarin? Are you teaching yourself via the Internet and things, or are you taking a proper course?

(My parents decided to speak to me only in English once I'd reached the age of 3, so now both my Shanghainese and mandarin are really terrible...)
I'm just listening to lost of Mandarin music and watching some Taiwan shows...I did go to a Mandarin course at my Chinese school but the teacher was teaching us Chinese, all of the people there were people Canto students so they know Chinese we just want to know how to pronounce it etc...for example she was explaining that in Chinese the word for eleven is 'ten-one' and twelve is 'ten-two' but twenty is 'two-ten' ...argh! :p:

And about your Chinese, there is still time, Leehom (Taiwan popstar) was born in America and only started learning Chinese when he was 18 and now he speaks fluently, just don't give up

Leehom is different though. He's really really smart, that's why he could master the language. However, it takes a lot of dedication and hard work to build up to a native-speaking level. Don't give up though...since this will pay off! :p:

    I won't!

I'm planning to spend a couple of weeks in China this summer holiday, so hopefully that will help - and moreover, I'll be buying a suitcaseful of Chinese films and CDs while I'm there to keep me entertained when I get back. Any recommendations?

cool, I will check them out...the only mando music I have is 周杰倫 Jay's music...apparently his mandarin is really 'slurred', so now my mandarin probably sounds poor

Wow...that's a lot of artists! I recognize some of them...but nevertheless...I'm not into Mandarin pop...I'm actually more into Japanese pop...but I know a lot of people that listen to 王力宏 and 周杰倫. Not sure about the other ones though. I'm guessing some of them are from Mainland China right...and some from Taiwan?

Most are from taiwan, 曹格 is from malaysia, I think (but you have to check out his song 'superwoman' and '笑我笨' they're really good, not such a fan of his newer stuff. But yeah, I think the rest are taiwanese...not sure about 蔡健雅 though.

I'm sure people have seen these posts, but can't we socialise on tsr without the constant political backlash and the constant need to defend one's country. I'm sure much of what we know, and are presented with via the media is warped and to formulate a 'justified' POV from that would be propaganda in itself. These things play on people's mind, and I'm sure all of us on this thread are concerned, but if we had something to contribute we wouldn't hesitate either.

    Oooer, new thread.

    大家好! ^^ 对不起,我的中文比较糟糕…… -_-;
Sorry guys, my Chinese isn't too good. Practically gave up after doing GCSE Chinese a few years back, ha... Vocab level went down the drain. Can speak it pretty well though... :]

As for Chinese music, I've only listened to some of 王力宏's and 周杰倫's, and per'aps some others whose names I don't know.
Yep, this is a new thread. Welcome!

It doesn't really matter if your Chinese isn't that good. I think we all have a limit to our knowledge of the Chinese language. You may add some inputs if you like and type in English if you wish.

Unfortunately for me, I can't type Chinese that well, since I am currently using an English keyboard. Nevertheless, I can type it, but it takes a very long time to write it out.

Yep, certainly. I think it's because Jay is more popular in Taiwan than the other artists (not sure about that...but this is my guess). Therefore, his songs are more spread to other countries and I guess the demand for his songs are more than the other artists in Taiwan.
