Default I really need help with Ububtu and Hardware

Hey everyone,

I just installed the latest distro of Ubuntu onto my HPCompaq Laptop - I have no prior Linux experience.

I partitioned my HD, so Half is Windows Vista and Half is Linux. However, on the Linux partition; it seems a lot of my hardware does not work.

The USB's work, as does the touch pad etc. However the Wireless does not work at all, and it seems my display adaptor does not work either (As I can only achieve a resolution max of 800x600 in Ubuntu). They are the only issues I can currently tell, with regards to hardware thus far - but I expect there will be issues with the SD card reader etc.

Now I am experienced with computers, but when it comes to Linux I am completely clueless, and I really need a hand with this. You can use technical language.

Heres the DXDiag log from Vista:-

Try looking at http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43 for your wireless adapter.

Check the nVidia site for their latest linux drivers to see if that helps with your display.

Broadcom Wireless. Ouch.

You'll have to extract the firmware using fwcutter from the Windows drivers if you're to get the wireless to work.

Can we assume your ethernet connection is working ? If it works then all you got to do is find the right driver for display & touchpad to get them working?

Have you tried posting in Ubuntu forum.(i do find you have posted in ubuntux though)

As a piece of advice: Pls try to make a short post so people would read & help. In this case, giving the compaq model, nvidia card model, wireless card model would do. The linux guys if required would ask for details, then we can give them.

To get the drivers for your display to work you need to activate the restricted drivers. Ubuntu doesn't come with closed source drivers out of the box for legal reasons, however they are very easy to activate. It's been a little while since I've used gnome or ubuntu but I believe you go to system > hardware drivers. From There is should list your graphics card and you just tick the box to activate it. After that the resolution should increase and you should be able to use compiz-fusion.

Thinking about that though you need to sort out the internet issue first because the driver needs to be downloaded. I don't know enough about wireless drivers to help you with that really, sorry.
