Smile Modern Language Studies

Hi!
I've got a confirmed place at Leicester to do Modern Language Studies (with a year abroad) from September and am choosing Italian, French and English lit.

I can't find out much about it and was wondering if anyone was doing this course, a joint honours in English or any language course with Italian/ French? What are languages like at Leicester/ what can I expect? Does anyone have any advice, especially about any reading I can do this summer to prepare myself? I've had a year off working since leaving school so really ought to do some stuff this summer to get my brain functioning again!!

Thanks if anyone can help- if not it'll be an interesting surprise!

I believe we only have one linguist who posts here occaisionally, but there is some general advice which should help. Look at your departmental website http://www.le.ac.uk/modlang/ and see if there is anything on there. If not, email someone. They should be more thank happy to help!!

Well I do French and Spanish, so if you have an ques about the French part of the course, then I'll be happy toanswer those. What do you want to know? I also know some people doing Italian and I work for modern languages department at open days so I can tell you a bit about Italian. Can't really help with the english bit, but anything to do with languages then I can help!

I'm not really sure what I want to know! Just things like- how big is the department? How many can I expect on the course? What's the typical number of hours a week? How much of that is lectures, small group stuff, seminars etc and what's the difference?!
Thank you!

If you go onto the university website and into the online prospectus it usually says how many people there are on the course and other stats such as how many people apply for that course, and how many places there are available, theres usually also info on scholarships and things like that too

Thats the website for the school of modern languages, if you just click through and have a look around you should be able to find out everything on there

Ok there are about 50 students doing French in my year, less than this doing Italian, and I dunno about English.
In terms of teaching, in your 1st year you do about 10-12 hours. This is made up of language classes (for French you have 1 hour of spoken class with a maximum of 10 students, and 2 hours of written class with a maximum of 15 students), you have a grammar lecture once a week with everyone doing 1st year French, then depending on the modules you take (I think you have to take understanding contemporary France) this is 1 lecture a week, and 1 seminar. I'm not too sure about Italian, but if you do beginners I think you have 4 hours of language a week (in small classes) and 3 hours if you do advanced.. this is what I think anyway!
If you've got any other questions, feel free to post them on here, or if anyone of that didn't make any sense, then just ask
