I thought it was Functionalists, i originally wrote it as Marxists and Functionalists use the same methodology only ones positive and the other negative but for some reason an incling at the back of my mind told me to change it to feminists lol.

And nope it was Steve Bruce, Weber is the one that says 'it depends', basically sits on the fence lol.

Which contemporary sociologist came up with the form of religion known as Shielaism?
Give two criticisms for both Marxist and functionalist approach to religion....
carta123
define a cult
define a sect

A cult is an inclusive religion which varies in size and can be local, national or international. It is often short lived and dies out with the leader. No monopoly, borrows from a range of sources. Memborship is flexible. Falls under World Affirming.

A sect is a local (or national) religion which is small and exclusive. Mo professional clergy or beureacratic structure. Sometimes more than a generation, may evolve into a denomination. Monopoly views of the truth, aim to re-establish fundamental truths. Has exceptional commitment and members often move away from society and form their own community. Falls under world rejecting.

Sect - Claim monopoly over the truth
Small radical movements
Seperate from the state
Intolerant to other religious organisations
Appeal... Those who are dissatisfied with mainstream religion

Cults - Bruce defined them as movements without a fixed set of beliefs.

Don't have much on cults...

Marxists focus too much on ecnomicas and class. Also some religions want change such as Islam.

Functionalists concentrate too much on the positive. They only look at groups and not individuals.

Nope, but you have come across this sociologist before especially in methods.

marxism = the ideological power of the church is undermined by the fact that fewer than 10% attend church
the church is sometimes used as a force AGAINST the rulling class

functionalism = Durkheims evidence is based on flawed evidence
also fails to recognise secularisation
Shielaism was put forward by Eileen Barker and can be used in a secularisation essay. Shielaism is a persons own belief systems which aren't apart of an actual organised religion.
Define a Civil Religion.
