i'm doing unit 2 and i'm so incredibly screwed. i got an A(86/90) in jan, but unit 2, my brain's turned to mush! i got straight Ds in mocks in class and my teachers/friends say i'm just pancikng and i'll get another A, but i really won't...
i grasp one thing and forget another ): i'm good for topic 6, 7 & 9, but 8 & 10 are just like WAAHHH?!!! calculations, enthalpy, oxidation i can dooo, but the wording of some stuff throws me and i'm compltely blank! i'm not even sure qwhat i even need to know for 8 & 10, is there a sylabus or w/e anywhere?

i hate this exam board. rediculous! oh and what bout those common sense questions like when they ask u what is sodium used for or something, im like huh?? the jan 08 paper had something on cars....that aint in our green students, i refuse to answer!

Okay, here goes:

You know you have 100cm3 or 0.1dm3 (divide by a thousand to convert) of HCl. You are told that this is of 2 mol/dm3 concentration. You are asked to find the number of mols in that solution.

First, multiply 2 x 0.1 to get the number of moles in the initial solution = 0.2 moles.
You are told that the acid is in excess, and you have calculate the no. of mols of Mg in 6bi (0.00416 moles). Looking at the cycle diagram, you can see that one mole of Mg reacts with 2HCl molecules, 1:2 ratio.
Now you multiply the moles of magnesium present by 2, to get the number of HCl moles used in the reaction:
0.00416 x 2 = 0.00832 moles of HCl used.

Now you simply subtract this number from the total number of moles of HCl in the solution, we calculated earlier:
0.2 moles HCl - 0.00832 moles of HCl used = 1.992 moles of HCl remaining.

At least one question which requires you to "think outside of the box" like that is guaranteed in Unit 1 lol.

I remember once they asked about why a nitrogenous compound was a good choice in car airbags . What a bunch of mingers.

Does anyone know how you can tell the difference between Fe2+ and Fe3+? I seem to remember it involved a precipitation reaction and Fe2+ turned green and Fe3+ turned orange.

I think the definitive test is some complex cyano ion that comes up in the last A2 mod (can't remember it right now...its 12:36AM here! lol)

For the AS units though, adding NaOH to obtain the insoluble Fe(OH)2 and Fe(OH)3 precipitates should give you a green and brown colour respectively.

Sorry just noticed this thread;

I have some really good revision notes for the whole Edexcel Nuffield Specification (Unit 1-21) that were extremely helpful in gaining my A grade in both AS & A2. I'm really sorry for having said this with a day to go. I've been busy with work these days, so haven't really had time to type them up

I've already uploaded Unit 19 (transition metals) just to let you know. I'll try and find the others but I haven't touched my notes in over a year now, so they're probably covered in an inch of dust.
