The DSU Thread
Welcome to the University of Durham forum: where prospective and current students can discuss everything from the differences between colleges to the nightlife, an abundance of Rahs to the Stockton campus.

Re: The DSU ThreadIf no one goes for science or social science, tell him I am happy to do either if it does not involve much work.(Original post by Foxius)
(According to Andy) The following DSU exec positions are unfilled:
- Postgraduate Officer
- Publicity Officer
But other ones:
- Faculty reps for Sciences, Social Sciences and Health,
- Race Awareness Officer
Elections for these positions will take place at the first council meeting of term, the date of which has not yet been announced.
I hope there are some eager-beavers out there!!! -
Re: The DSU ThreadI was the science rep, it basically involves going to a termly meeting with the staff representatives of the departments in the faculty(Original post by Hopping Mad Kangaroo)

Re: The DSU ThreadIf that's all that needs doing (and it doesnt clash with SSC meetings) then I am in. How come no one ever wants these posts anyway? They sound like pretty good CV material for doing very little.(Original post by Itchynscratchy)
I was the science rep, it basically involves going to a termly meeting with the staff representatives of the departments in the faculty -
Re: The DSU ThreadYou're a shining beacon of representation then!(Original post by Hopping Mad Kangaroo)
I don't think anyone went - I certainly couldn't be bothered anyway, like the rest of my fellow reps.
It was actually decently attended - around the same number of people as there were last time.
The meeting stalled a bit when we got onto election for the Race Awareness officer - both guys who we RONned lasted time (largely due to the fact that neither showed up, by my reckoning) were present yesterday. Then there was a long Q&A after their husts and the vote was so tight that it had to be taken to ballot box, so we won't find out who's got it until Democracy Committee lets us know.
In other news, we got the Mildert Lake motion passed meaning that the DSU will actively support us in getting Estates & Buildings to do it. It also sets a precedent for urgent work that needs to be done in other colleges by E&B.
Because they are ****. -
Re: The DSU ThreadJack Little won - check his FB status and new Facebook group. I can't believe the RON vote was allowed to prevail to tell the truth - the guy who asked for it is a complete nob.(Original post by Foxius)

Pfft - E&B will just ignore it.In other news, we got the Mildert Lake motion passed meaning that the DSU will actively support us in getting Estates & Buildings to do it. It also sets a precedent for urgent work that needs to be done in other colleges by E&B.

Re: The DSU ThreadI hate E&B. We had our bar re-done a bit in the summer and it cost a ludicrous amount to get it done because we had to get a quote from E&B and use their people to do it ... also, the Hild Bede crest looks like a sticker as opposed to the "frosting" that was promised. Ugh.(Original post by Foxius)

HMK, why couldn't you be bothered to go? It's not THAT far away, this is Durham we're talking about. Besides, I think everyone should make an effort to visit other colleges at some point. Not to mention that if everyone had that kind of attitude, I imagine that Butler meetings would be rather poorly attended. -
Re: The DSU ThreadOur bar is not getting done by E&B - thats for certain. When we get it eventually done anyway...(Original post by Jelkin)

Because I am full of flu and its not like I haven't visited Hild Bede enough times anyway - the meeting had nothing worthwhile on the agenda anyway. Asides - they choose not to hold meetings in Aidan's because its too far away, the closest they will get to us is Mary's. Pretty unfair imo.HMK, why couldn't you be bothered to go? Isn't it the rules to get these things done by E&B? That's why we had to go through them
-
Re: The DSU ThreadWell it would be a de facto decision entirely up to James Owen, I believe. Mary's have certainly had a few meetings now...(Original post by Jelkin)

I believe they are supposed to be consulted, but if its JCR money then you can spend it elsewhere, as long as the contractor is reputable.Isn't it the rules to get these things done by E&B? That's why we had to go through them

Re: The DSU ThreadHe's a friend of mine so I'll ask him but I don't think that's the case.(Original post by Hopping Mad Kangaroo)

Hmmm, I'm going to look into the E&B thing because AFAIK the only reason we went through E&B for the bar was because we actually had to. I'd like that not to be the case though. -
Re: The DSU ThreadWell in which case can he make the next meeting in Aidans - we are overdue.(Original post by Jelkin)

Our JCR almost certainly got external contractors in for the bar, or at least the design of it. No one has built it yet.Hmmm, I'm going to look into the E&B thing because AFAIK the only reason we went through E&B for the bar was because we actually had to. I'd like that not to be the case though. -
