Default Concerning what to take to A2

hey all,

for an architecture degree, what do you think of the following combination of A2 subjects:

Maths, Physics and Music? (And art AS)

would music be considered a "soft subject" at all?

Many thanks,

Rich

No one would consider music "soft" (well, no right minded person). You need obvious talent. Still, it's to do with how relevant a subect is. A number of unis are keen for their students to have a mixture of sciences and arts. Although most will do history, english lit etc I suppose music still does allow a student to develop their communication, critical, dexterity and memory abilities. Quite useful in architecture.

You need to be careful about not having the full A-level in art. A number of universities will be fine with this, providing you still have a decent portfolio. Most of the top ranked unis will still much prefer the A-level (plus portfolio).

My advice would be to take Art to the full A-level and keep music as the AS. Still, it also depends on university. Which ones are you looking at going to?

I don't think music is considered a soft subject. But keep in mind that some universities as for a portfolio or task or some kind and doing Art to the full A level would be beneficial. But I think the music is good, it balances out the maths and physics.

Personally I'd keep Art since it's more relevant to the course but if you'd rather do music then go for it.

regarding my choices, i havent visited yet but im hoping for liverpool/msa/ cardiff at a push. liverpool or manc dont say they require art, but a portfolio. I have 12 weeks of summer to make one, and some architectural work experience!

i feel my music is my stronger subject of the two, but it'll all depend on the results naturally. I ideally, would like to use the free time gained from free periods (and the weekends gained from no art) to concentrate on getting the best grades possible in the other subjects.

good approach or not?

thanks,

Rich

If the universities will accept a portfolio instead of Art A-level (or in combination with your AS) the sure, go with music. If that's what you enjoy and think you'll do better in.

I don't think Cardiff require art a-level either, just the portfolio. I may be wrong.

i think its only UCL that actually make a demand of A-Level art. and im really not interested in applying there.

Yeah, i think i'll go with music. I get to study The Apprentice theme anyway! and i guess i'll get credit for AS art, and a 'folio.

Thanks for the help guys, much appreciated!

Cambridge do, I think. Newcastle do (although, in certain circumstances, they'll accept DT). Nottingham also require either art or DT. There'll also be a few others.

But yes some unis have been turning away from the art requirement and, for exceptional candidates especially, waiving the requirement and accepting a portfolio instead.
