Default Studying Abroad and GCSE Results

A) I wish to study a year in North America as part of a History Degree, I have no language at GCSE and the only university I've found that have such programs is UCL which i will be applying to, but obviously with their interview process etc. there's no guarantee I'll get into there, so do you know of a website/any other Russell/Fringe universities that offer a year in North America, or any other English Speaking country.

Is there a website where i can search through these universities (Googled, but no luck!)

B) I completely mucked up GCSEs (No coursework handed in/no revision etc.)

I got 7As and 3Bs, but was predicted and should have got (with sufficient work) 11A*s.

I'm predicted to get AAAA next year, and I've just done AS Levels and should get ABB as a minimum this year.

So are unis that bothered about GCSE results? Or will they like the fact that i saw my mistakes and improved? (I also changed schools from yr11 - yr12).

Thanks, Jake

Heyy, if you go on the UCAS website you can search through unis and possible degrees with criteria that you enter. Quite useful really as it lists the unis that fit your selection!
The GCSE results you achieved aren't that bad and if you do really well in your ALevels the uni won't care about them. BUT you should also try and do xtra-curricular activities.

Mate, 7 As and 3 Bs is not completely messing up! And besides, only the very very top unis seem to care about GCSEs. Seriously, you'll be fine.

I have the impression that most universities offer a year abroad. And I imagine most of them have North American options. I know for sure that Leeds and Manchester do, and I really think any of the top-30ish will..

Cheers, thanks for the info. I've checked out the UCAS thing but i couldn't search for specific year abroad options, they all seem to be with a language, but I guess I'll ask when I'm at some Open Days

No you can't search like that, you'll probably have to look at departmental/university websites. Good luck!

You won't be able to find what you're looking for on UCAS. It's a case of going through each university's website I'm afraid, lots of places to exchanges with universities in the USA.

If you would consider combinging history with English Sheffield run an "american studies degree " (or rather, english/history with a heavy focus on american lit/history )that gives you a semester abroad.

Quite a few universities have links with american universities wher you can spent a semester of your second year abroad - though places arent plentiful and there is no guarentee you would receive it over someone else (you have to apply, i think? And they assess the best candidates out of those who put themselves forward). So its a good option but if study in america is important to you it might not be worth banking on.

I would suggest Warwick, but no language GCSE. Try Sussex they have good links with Reed College in the states, one of the Iron Triangle of hard working colleges.

I know Exeter encourages study abroad for humanities courses, so that might be worth a look: http://www.huss.ex.ac.uk/undergrad/studyabroad.php
