Default Architecture A Level: Art & design 3D, Ar& Design: Graphics

Hello, new here. erm will the top universities for Architecture accept Art & design: 3D and Art & Design: Graphic instead of the the "traditional Fine Art"?

I am also choosing Maths and Citizenship (AS Only) for my A Levels. Are these subjects recomended, especially Citizenship? I would love to get into Cambridge, Uni College Of London or Nottingham Uni

Are your four Alevel choices going to be:

1. Art and Design 3D
2. Art and Design Graphics
3. Maths
4. Citizenship

If so, i doubt you'll recieve an interview at Cambridge as they'll require at least two purely academic subjects, if not three... Maths will obviously count as one, but you'll need more to be seriously considered. (I know this from my college this year, there were 3 of us who applied for Architecture, and i was the only one who recieved an interview/the only one who had at least two academic subjects)

As far as I'm aware, part of the UCL admission requirements state Alevel Art as a necessity but this might come under your two Art and Design options, i'm not sure. Someone who has applied to UCL recently wlil be able to tell you more about them.

These choices might be ok for Notts, though i think the best thing to do with all your choices is just email them and ask, because then you'll know for definite. I think the only advice i'd give (and you don't have to agree with it because its mainly just opinion) is that you should pick two academic/traditional subjects and then the artistic ones.

Nottingham allow any subjects; they just require the grades and a good Personal Statement. When I went to the open day last week, the tutor actually said "we have no specification for subjects although either a portfolio or A level art is required; we simply ask for good grades and enthusiasm!

so there you go!

in agreement about Cambridge - they ask for a variety really.. they're quite weird
Outta curiosity.. any reason you particularly want to go to Cambridge? I don't mean to put you off, but there are plenty of other better universities (in my opinion) that offer better architecture courses.

Other than that, I'd say that Sheffield would accept that - they may ask you for a portfolio.

But be reminded that your statement needs to voice out your talents.. and its this statement that universities will use to decide if they have 2 candidates who have the same grades.

as for UCL - totally arty - they would accept that. But UCL are pretty weird in themselves where their means of offering places changes every year - but what I do know from experience is that they do take a long time to respond, ask for interviews and they have their own application as well (which you'd get sent if they are considering you). Their rate of offers is quite low in my opinion and I'd have to say that their architecture leans so extremely to the Arts side that it fails to appreciate the engineering/technical side of Architecture.
My advice would be that you go for an open day - as this will show you what their studios/facilities are like and get their prospectus to see what type of work is being produced by the current students.

Yes UCL is certainly an awkward one to apply to- you have no idea of how they really select people.... so many people apply that even some of the artiest people will be rejected for many reasons. And also, in agreement with wackysparkle, they do slacken a little too generously on the technical side which is actually very important for the career and so could potentially stand against you when finding jobs in years to come.

I have just finished my AS's and so am applying in september! ha ha no but i have cousins and friends who have applied and have said that in terms of the chance of you gaining a place, it is almost not worth the hassle. still, they are still a good department and at the top of their league so fair play to them

Wel to be honest, I've done my AS once in my school sixth form which didn't go very well so appllied to a 6th Form Collge and these are the subjects I chose for the A Levels so I was thinking are these acceptable for the uni's I'm interested in.

Is there some kind of humanities you could do? Only you only need one art subject, and they like a balance of arts, sciences and humanities. How about history of art? does your college offer that? I would drop the 3D art if i were you, as it limits what work you'll be doing. Most candidates take fine art to give their portfolio variety.....
