Does anyone know what uni is best for Media Studies?
Im not going until 2009 but i dont want to end up going to a uni where it is rubbish for what i want to do.
I may do a join honors: Media Studies/Business

Does anyone know?

For media studies you'll be looking mainly at the ex polys. However, for things such as film studies then new glass plate universities of the 1960s (such as Warwick and University of East Anglia) are quite strong. A few of the other traditional universities, especially the red bricks (Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, Birmingham) also offer a few.

There is no "best". There are departments that are stronger than others in terms of teaching and research. But, even then, courses change and modules or the general focus changes within the same courses between unis if you know what I mean.

Then there are the subjective personal factors to take into account (location - city/town, campus/non-campus), student support including financial support,

No one can tell you what "the best" are and what is good for what you want to do, especially when we don't know what you want to do. But, as a general rule these unis are quite strong in the area

But be aware that these don't necessarily offer "media studies" degrees, their content can vary significantly. Especially between the traditional unis/1960s unis and the ex-polys

The best thing would be to check on UCAS for universities that offer Media Studies. Otherwise, I know that Bournemouth University is apparently good for media (though I'm not sure if they specifically offer Media Studies).

Sunderland is supposedly alright for it (despite the University itself being something like 95th on the national league table), and offers plenty of different courses in it. Probably ones joint with Business, too.

The best University for you - as a media student - would probably be the one with the 'extras' relating to your field. For example, is it production, television, radio, etc that you are interested in. For example if you want to be involved with radio, you'll want a University with the facilities and a student radio station.

How about swansea uni? Apparently, they offer plenty of various media degrees- single or joint honours with language/business/history. I really want to hear your opinions- what are actually the opions after graduation, with that being a so-called 'mickey mouse' degree? Will i end up with just a useless piece of paper?

In fact, they do offer Media Studies but as I've been told, there are no paces left. I just got accepted to Screen Studies with german though

The Languages Dept has a good reputation and is even before Cardiff in the Times League.

Does anyone know more about the Media Dept?

Hi guys,

I also was wondering if you could give me any advice, I want to go into Advertising as a profession. However, studying just advertising in Uni is too narrow as its so hard to get a job in it after graduation. So i have decided to study Media Studies at Uni as its broader and gives me more job options at the end.

Im also living out, so im also looking at the surrounding area and living accommodations.

I really wanted to apply for advertising with public relations then read further into it and most unis want an interview with a portfolio..
A portfolio for advertising seems hard as i have never done any advertising.. well not that will be able to fill a portfolio.
So stuck right now feels like i have come to a big hurdle

Yea i understand what you mean.

To get into advertising would be great as i love it and have such an interest in it. But if not i would probably go off into the Media Researcher area.

I have a few contacts in the media area, so that will be helpful for me.
