Overview of Lancaster University
I'm currently studying here in the United States and looking to spend the spring semester studying English at Lancaster University.
I've just started doing research about the school and looking to here some of your opinions. Thoughts on the academics at the college. What's the nightlife like at the college. How does the housing work at Lancaster. Things I should know being an international student, and anything else you feel I should know.
Thanks,

Re: Overview of Lancaster University
I can't really comment on the academics
BUT
The nightlife is good when you start. Each college (the university is college-based, 9 small colleges in the uni) has a bar which gives the whole campus a good community feel.
Lancaster as a city is not exactly the most cosmopolitan and after a while nights out can feel a little tired and repetitive, but its more than good enough to begin with!
There's a lot of brand new accomodation on campus at Lancaster, a lot of en suite rooms, so depending on your college it should be comfy. Bowland and County, I think, have the least number of new en-suite rooms. -
Re: Overview of Lancaster University
Exams here are essay type, there is only one english literature paper that is multiple choice and the course is over subscribed.
Are you here for the first term or the second two or all year? If you have the choice of a term, I would pick the first term just ebcause there are so many more socials and Freshers week to get you really involved. You would only have to do essays then as all exams are at the end of term.
I have a very good friend who has just finished his second year doing english language or a third year friend who has just completed an english literature degree. -
Re: Overview of Lancaster UniversityYes, 'tis true. My friend going into 3rd year next year is highly delighted. One of the modules is tested by a multiple choice exam!(Original post by Teao the Cat)
There's a multiple choice english lit paper?!?! Not to my knowledge- Mine this afternoon is most certainly two essays, unless someone has forgotten to tell me something vital!
I don't know which one though, sorry. -
Re: Overview of Lancaster UniversityIts not overly difficult... at least not for the first year. enough to keep you thinking though. There's a nice wide range of texts, so you will experience lots. We have a few really amazing lecturers, and none are really abysmal. I enjoyed the course, anyway.(Original post by Hockey08)
What are your thoughts on the English department? Do you find the professors intelligent and interesting? Is the English program very difficult?
