Default Social policy - why is the offer so low?

I'm considering applying to the social policy + economics course. i notice that the standard offer is ABB but the competition is very intense (117 applicants : 3 places and 92:4 in the two previous years respectively). likewise with the other social policy courses, with offers at BBB.

any idea why the standard offer is set so low for the social policy courses despite the competition?

you're looking at it the wrong way round.

the competition is so fierce purely BECAUSE the grades are so low..

haha, interesting way of seeing it. does this suggest that the PS is extremely important for social policy (more so than the other courses)? they apparently aren't reacting to supply and demand here... i know history got shifted up from ABB to AAB.

No it means they have to sift through a lot of ****e to find the gold nuggets. Don't know why they bother to be honest lol, the people who get in probably get/are predicted AAB or AAA anyway!

But yeah, if you have good GCSE's (or equivalent), predicted good grades and a good PS you should stand more than a decent chance.

It's just LSE's way of encouraging more applicants so they can keep up their image as the most over-subscribed uni...

It could be so that they open their course to a wider range of applicants.

Yeah this is so true, I can't believe a course like Government has a standard offer of AAB when it is the top uni in the country for politics and world renowned...

edit: not that I'm complaining though!

I'm not sure it has that much to do with artificial inflation of statistics, i reckon at LSE, and other unis such as Imperial have offers less than AAA so that they are a viable second choice for Oxbridge candidates or whatever.

Again though, i'm definitely not complaining, its BBB for my course :P

Funny thing is I was looking at the 2007 prospectus and most of the courses that they were asking AAB now was ABB back then even there was quite a lot of courses that ask for BBB

The grade requirment shouldn't bother you as the social policy deparment is the best in the UK

From someone who has applied I got in with:

2A*'s 5A's 2B's and C at GCSE
predicted AAA(that's if I resit some maths mod as I did it in a year)

As long as you are an all rounder academicly and have a good PS (I sent a separate one to LSE for social pol and econ) you should be fine

Competition for LSE is so much like at Oxbridge that most successful applicants are predicted AAB/AAA anyway (just to echo everyone else).

My advice is to get your teacher to predict you AAA even if you don't end up getting it as if the offer is ABB then you don't need to kill yourself to get AAA
