If I wanted to do a PhD at Oxford or Cambridge, would a masters from UEA hamper that?

Only if you do badly on it.

Hi, I have been accepted for MA Development Studies to all three. Could someone please tell me which is the better university?

Compare the course structure at each and see which best suits you.

well, i prefer the UEA course in terms of the modules offered, but how good a university is UEA when compared to SOAS and Sussex? I would like to take up a PhD later at Oxbridge........I can't seem to find any first hand knowledge of the teaching and the lecturers at UEA

I have heard that UEA is also extremely good and well respected for the subject. Could someone tell me a bit more about the department. If I wanted to do a PhD at Oxford or Cambridge, would a masters from UEA hamper that?

not another.

if UEA is well respected and the dept is good, what is wrong with doing the PhD there.

For a phd you want to be at the best departments working on the best research, often Oxbridge are not the best. If UEA is well respected, therefore this should be your aim.

Furthermore do some research cambridge do not offer PhDs in development studies http://www.devstudies.cam.ac.uk/ only MPhil level and Oxford (which has been pointed out at nauseum) does not offer PhDs, its DPhils they do and yes that can be done http://www.qeh.ox.ac.uk/courses/dphil

If you prefer UEA then go to UEA. How "good" a university is depends on whether it's good for you, and as you seem to prefer UEA, then go for UEA. If you want to do a PhD at Oxford they won't be bothered about where you got your masters from but how well you performed on it (and your undergraduate degree), as well as the quality of your references and research proposal.

When it comes to doing a PhD, universities are far more interested in you as a person, your ideas, and your proposal. Simply going to SOAS as it specialises in development wouldn't increase your chances of doing a PhD if you're more interested in the course at UEA and would do better there.

Thank you for the replies.
What about in terms of job prospects? I plan on working for a few years after my masters before i take up anything further. I am very concerned about this because I have been told that employers do look at the university name. It might not be the determining factor, but it matters all the same. Would UEA be considered a solid university for my subject? I am an international student. Not many people here have been able to tell me much about it.

For academia, your university has very little relevance. For employment, on the other hand, it does hold more weight. Out of those three SOAS has the best reputation and also specialises in development, so it would probably be best for employment prospects afterwards, whereas any of the three would be fine for a PhD afterwards.
