Keele Internet
Hello guys, my first post on here.
Could anyone give me any information on the Internet at Keele? I have already heard about the 500mb download limit per day as well as the average 10Mbps speeds and file sharing not being allowed. Could anyone verify this information?
Also Is there any more information anyone could give such as if any ports are closed such as those used for online gaming (MMos, FPS). I ain't talking about those crappy free internet games here

Re: Keele Internet
I dunno about online gaming, although people in my block managed it fine I think.
You've got a 500mb download limit every day, if you run out you get cut off... normally until about 23:58 when it comes back on again but until then you can only access your Keele webmail, the Keele site and KUBE I think.
Where I was at (Hawthorns) the download speed was normally good, could get up to about 500kb/s when downloading an album from sites.
File sharing isn't allowed but they don't really check up on it as far as I know and pretty much everyone does it. When you install your cd it deactivates your software that file share but just turn it back on when it's installed.
That's it I think.
Welcome btw.

Re: Keele Internet
the limit takes into account your uploads as well as your downloads. file sharing isn't allowed but it's still possible, you just need to be careful about the amount you upload. if they see you are sending as much as you are receiving, they will pick on you.
also the limit is closer to 600mb than 500mb, and my all time record was 692mb on a continuous download hehe
edit: all udp ports are blocked which means 99% of online games will not work (including xbox live) -
Re: Keele Internet
You say that all UDP ports are blocked, but what about TCP? I don't fully understand UDP and TCP but if a game or application only requires TCP I should be fine right?
Also, if all UDP ports are blocked that means I can't even file transfer on MSN? Sounds like closed UDP ports suck but i guess i'll have to grin and bear it.
Thanks for the information though -
Re: Keele Internet
all udp traffic is blocked. but you can always route your udp packets over tcp if you're desperate. incoming connections are mostly blocked (ie. no server software), outbound tcp ports are 99% open (for example 6667 is closed). pasv ftp is allowed and works. direct connections to other hallsnet (160.5.*.*) ip's are blocked i think. connections are mostly stable, remapping your drive usually fixes any non-bandwidth related problems.
apart from the 500mb/day you can't really complain for 'free'
. tor also works (for all tcp traffic) should you ever wish to hide your (obvious) hostname (XX-vlanXXX.<haw|lin|ohx|bar|hor>.ke ele.ac.uk) from any would-be prying eyes
it would be wise to use ssl/encryption where possible (bt, nntp, irc, ftp).. good luck.

Re: Keele Internet
Internet at Keele can be very frustrating.
500mb is not enough, and it's a bit of a joke to be honest.
Other Universities don't have limits.
If you're eager to avoid paying a TV license fee by watching programmes online, tough luck. You can just about watch one show, or about 20 YouTube videos before you're cut off.
As for F/S, you can occasionally get online, and when you do, you get fantastic speeds, but yet again the 500mb becomes a pain in the arse. If you're caught F/S you are likely to get a week long network ban.
With regards to gaming, no chance. My X-Box wouldn't even connect to the internet, and yet again the limit means there really is little point trying. -

Hi there! All I can say is that, for me, the internet at keele is relatively reliable, quick enough for me, and ive never used up the limit on internet of 500mb (or whatever the limit is). Enjoy keele! duncan -

Re: Keele InternetYou also have no d/l limit when using computers in the library.(Original post by Minardi)
I've heard Keele Wireless doesn't count towards your download limit... and you can get excellent range on some plug in antennas...
Not that I've tried to get it (yet) but if you have a wireless card that will accept an external aerial it may be worth a go.
But still, the limit is annoying whilst in halls, and unnecessary. -
Re: Keele InternetOh yeah, all that sent me regularly over was podcast downloads and youtube. And I like internet radio too. I lost track how many times I was cut off.(Original post by nfraser3)
Is this 500MB enough to say....have msn messenger on? Facebook? as well as general browsing for the course?
