The Climate Change 2007 Synthesis report is based on the overall work of the International Panel on Climate Change in producing its fourth assessment report - the culmination of six years of extensive research.

The report concluded that:

[1] Warming of the climate system is unequivocal;
[2] Even with immediate action by world nations to reduce emissions the effects of global warming, such as anthropogenic warming and sea level rise would likely continue for centuries, though the intensity would be reduced;
[3] Global atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide have markedly increased in the past two hundred to three hundred years due to human activity.

It also suggested many areas of action, a couple which have been highlighted below:

[1] In the water sector, the primary proposed adaptation strategy was the expanded harvesting of rainwater, coupled with water storage and conservation techniques. To accomplish this would require national water policies and integrated water resources management and the primary constraints would be financial.
[2] In the energy sector, the primary proposed adaptation strategy was the use of renewable energy sources and the reducing of dependence on single sources of energy. This would require national energy policies and the adoption of fiscal and financial incentives to encourage the use of alternative energy sources, with the key limiting factors being the availability of viable alternatives and the financial and technological barriers in adopting any alternatives.

A recent IPCC conference in Germany (January 2008) found that although progress was being made in the renewable energy strategy outlined above, in all of the other sectors, namely, the water, agriculture, infrastructure, human health, tourism and transport sectors there had been an unreasonable attempt to address the issues. Even in the energy sector many nations are failing to sufficiently increase the contribution of alternative energy sources via incentives.

As the IPCC representative to the United Nations, I call for all member nations to seriously consider the findings of our report in 2007 and the recommendations from then and to implement suitable strategies to avoid worsening the dire situation the climate is in. Repurcussions will last for centuries even if member nations act comprehensively tomorrow, but very few nations, if any, have acted with sufficient speed and strength since the publication of the report in 2007.

The IPCC representative invites nations' representatives to discuss how they may meet our suggestions, discuss our suggestions and to explain how they have worked to reduce the human effect on the climate.

Liechtenstein echos the SG's comments, and looks forward to more activity by the IPCC.

The WHO and WFP collectively welcome the IPCC into the clan of the UNOs and hopes that environmental awareness will become a key goal to all nations for forthcoming years.
