Re: Cyclists Societythis is free: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/ and well known on the internet for being very good! Alternatively keep an eye out on cycle magazines in shops, every so often one of them releases a maintenance guide of some sort which can be useful to keep in the garage.(Original post by WdA04)
Hey, I was wondering whether anyone has a link to a good guide for bike servicing to make a bike in tip top condition? Mine is a little bit iffy currently and over the summer I'm going to be cycling around 10 miles a day to the gym and back when not at uni.
Thanks

Re: Cyclists SocietyYou're lucky a 30mph tumble turned out to be "nothing too serious"(Original post by Bromers)
Did my first race today. Unfortunately some **** cut across me and I went tumbling at about 30 mph. Left side is pretty cut up but nothing too serious. Was good fun while it lasted though.
(Counter-intuitively, it's sometimes safer to fall at faster speeds because you don't have the time to react and put out your arm so instead your shoulder, thigh and ribcage soften the fall - a guy from my club went off at 10mph and snapped his wrist.) -
Re: Cyclists SocietyI think you might be right, it happened so fast I didn't have time to stick my hands out. One second I was riding in the bunch and the next I'm on the floor thinking "WTF happened there?!"(Original post by Brutal Chav)

Hey!
I'd like to join this (only just seen it!), cycling is one of the best things ever, I plan to cycle like all the time this summer!

If this weather clears up I may actually clean my bikes for the first time in 3 or 4 years. Can't even remember what colour the downtube is anymore

Re: Cyclists Society
Good club race last night, I was moved up a category before the start of the race so didn't know what pace to expect from them, all I knew was that they were faster than the previous group I was in. 3 laps of a 8.5 mile course. Didn't get a top placing but finished with the bunch. Quite proud I managed to hang in with the group
We had a very silly way of rotating the front man, we moved from the back to the front which used up so much energy instead of letting the front man do 15 seconds on the front and then drop to the back which would have been so much better and allowed most of us to conserve energy for the finishing gallop. Next week is the 25 mile time trial

Re: Cyclists Society
Collected my first ever racing bike today. I naively believed I would just be able to cycle it home on the road (I am very used to cycling on the road). I was wrong; the bike is a deathtrap (even though I did make it home alive)!
- I do not know where to hold onto the handles.
- I do not understand the gears yet.
- The breaks feel very weak and are in a strange place.
- I cannot signal without coming to a stop.
- I feel extremely low down compared to my hybrid.
All in all I find it very difficult to balance on and I am so used to lazily balancing on my hybrid. Somebody please tell me it will get easier to use! Also any tips for beginner-racer bikers?

Re: Cyclists Society
What songs do you guys listen to get psyched up before an event ?
This is my favourite, full bass

Re: Cyclists SocietyI met a guy at Mount Mammoth who had one of those at the car park, we got chatting to him and I asked to try it out around the car park. I got about ten meters and gave it back to him. Couldn't stand it, it felt so grim.(Original post by dhr90)

To add to how horrible it felt, I can't abide the idea of single speed for DH; I find it the best option for dirt jumping and BMX, but I think DH/AM/FR needs a set of gears, otherwise you're stuck on (average) gear three / four and its horrible.

- The Fountain.
- Crush.
- The Island Part 1/2.
- Hold your colour.
Any combination of those before a race or before a DH run will get me stoked. Since its against the rules to listen to music during any event now, (at least within DH) I can't get a list for that, but my casual run list is vast.
Around four hundred songs just for actually downhilling too, then I've got playlists for the climb, the level riding, maintanence and most discplines.
To me, music fits perfectly with riding.

Re: Cyclists SocietyNice choice mate, love pendulum, I have "the tempest" on one of my cycling playlists, love that tune. I have quite a few playlists myself, a few for interval training, a few for Sunday runs, and then a playlist for climbing... get me psyched. Yea during our races we aren't allowed to listen to music.(Original post by DH-Biker)

Re: Cyclists SocietyProbably your best bet is a second hand / refurbished bike - anything that is £100 new is going to be a BSO (bike shaped object i.e. utterly crap).(Original post by sparkysarmy)
Any websites which sell cheapish bikes for everyday dotting around for a 19yr old? Mine is on it's last legs as i've had it 10+ years and the rust is practically taking control of it now!
Budget is £100 tops.
Cheers.
Where are you in the country? I might be able to point you in the direction of a bike recycling project (and failing that, there's always gumtree / eBay). -

I live near Exeter so the south west. Would of thought something would be available for a simply dotting about with.
Cheers. -

Doesn't look like it is built for DH
Single speed apart from BMX and track is just a phase I think. Some will use it as training etc but those serious about racing know they will perform better with gears... Mind you, I have gears and pretty much stick to one gear on each bike.

If you're an Exeter Uni student, then this lot might know http://www.exeter.ac.uk/sustainabili...bike/unicycle/
This one sometimes has used bikes - although the website says they don't at the moment, it may be worth phoning http://www.mobilecycleservice.net/
Online bike auctions from a specialist site http://www.goinggoingbike.com/
And then there's eBay and gumtree as well - but please do make some attempt with those two to ensure that the bike isn't stolen! -
Re: Cyclists Society
Okay, I am going bike shopping this week for a mountain bike and it's a different type of bike to what I'm used to so would like some prior knowledge before I go.
Currently, I have a rather nice road bike and a CX too, planning to sell the CX and replace it with the MTB as this seems far more sensible and for the past few months I have been wanting to experiment and roam free abit more. Even more since I started borrowing my mates old mtb, I suppose because I've been cycling for so long it feels far more exhilating.
So yes, can you suggest a good bike? anything I should look for? Or avoid? Recommended brands etc etc? I will obviously be chatting to the sales people, but I know essentially they will just want to sell me a bike. My budget is anywhere up to 3k but preferably less.
Any help is appreciated! -

For your money Canyon are a serious deal. They have no middle man so their bikes are a great price for the kit you seem to be getting
