Hi, I am trying to write a TV series...
Hey
I need to create a really good main character. I seem to be writing her really bland and boring. I need some help if you could...?
BThe basic storyline:
Ruby works as a dogs body at a radio station (plays sort of indie, alternative music which is quite mainstream now but... what you gonna do?!). She gets together with Joe, a radio presenter with a show between 9pm til 1am. Joe is quite well known because he also presents on TV. Their relationship gets a lot of media ttention because Ruby is 17 and Joe is 29. They dont care at first and are comfortable with each other and their relationship but something goes wrong and they brea up. Ruby then gets together with Joe's co-presenter on the radio show, Ben. There is then rivalry between Joe and Ben but in the end Ruby and Joe get back together and then blah blah blah... see where the series or two goes etc. Basically, here is what I have written about Ruby:
Ruby is a 17 years old student living in a 3 bed flat in north London with 3 students from UCL. She has recently taken her A level exams in Maths, Media Studies and English. Her father lives in Austria with another man and her mother, a wealthy author, lives in Wiltshire and pays Ruby’s rent and sends her money every month. Her mother used to live with her in London but when she retired and decided they should move. Ruby was already into the first half of her year of A levels and so her mother let her stay in London. She lives with 2 other girls, Evie and Tabitha, and a boy, ‘Mattie’ Matthew. Ruby’s brother, Alfie, lives in Northampton. He is studying Media Studies at the University there. Ruby also often talks to the homeless man on the corner of her road, Peter, who she met when she gave him her Subway sandwich once.
Firneds
- home - Evie and Tabitha - Evie is like a rock star type girl, always drunk or high
- work - met head of department, Amanda, when she forgot her key to get into the offiices
- random meetings - homeless guy, other random people
- through other friends - again, just random people
- neighbours - just hi's and bye's etc.
Family
- mother and father - explained above
- brothers and sisters - brother mattie. Gets kicked out of Uni comes to live with Ruby. Quite slobby
- grandparents - xmas cards/birthday cards etc

- where does she work? Radio station
- What are her responsibilities? getting coffee, collecting printing, research, shadowing the producer
- Who does she work with? Joe, Ben, Amanda, Producer or Joe's show, other random office people, not many around at 9pm though.
- How long has she been there? 3 weeks at begining of the series. It is summer holidays after her a levels exams
- Is this her career choice? Producer - yes
- Guests into the office/studio - she meets musicians, comedians etc
- Enemies - suppose it needs someone who just doesn't like her for no reason in particular
Education
- at what point in her education is she at? end of a levels. thinking about university, unsure though, she might be given a proper job in the series at the radio station
- What are her grades like? A/B
- Is she going to carry on in education? explained 2 above
- What is she studying?Was studying Maths, Media Studies and English lang & lit
Surroundings
- London: where abouts in London? North, Islington somewhere I reckon, Camden
- What is her home like? Ok, not a palace but not a dump
- What are the people like in her area? General London people, business men etc
- Crime rats etc - same as everywhere else in London I spose
- Family street or professionals - Professionals in a town house made into flats
- Next door neighbours - young professionals
Hobbies/Interests
- unsure
Money
- Mother sends her all the money she needs but gets a little bit from odd jobs etc
Personality
- polite
- intelligent
i dunno what else.
I dont want her to be loud and annoying nor too quiet so she does not seem like the main character anymore. I want her to be likable and memorable. I also read somewhere, that without the character having a secret, they are not worth watching or writing about. So, I thought, maybe she could have a really young baby who lives with her mum in Wiltshire and then she may have to look after her when her mum brings her down to London. Or maybe her mum could die and she would have to look after and grieve for her mum and Joe could help in this or he could hinder her recovering??. I dunno, I think they might all be too cliche though. I really don't want to be cliche or predictable and boring. can anyone help me create this character?
I know this is seriously long. Sorry.
