Re: Best bank account for international students
best one is hsbc because they will open an account without proof of address. from what ive seen, they are the only ones that will accept no proof of uk address. however, they will ask for proof of address from your home, so if you have a driving licence, utility bill, etc from your country, you might want to bring that. i have also experienced a situation where abbey did not ask me for proof of address but maybe that was an isolated situation because abbey like the other banks have asked me tons of questions, including if i have a job and how i am getting paid. i was quite surprised to see how many questions they asked me at the banks. i think they asked me more questions at the bank than when i entered the country at the airport. the funny thing is though. it is probably easier to get a credit card or other kinds of credit. very ironic. when you give them money, it is hard, but when you take money from them, its easy. go figure.
with that said, barclays is the worst of them all. they examined my passport to death. even called up the head office to ask for security features of the passport such as holograms, including how long the passports from my country were valid for. it was horrible. if you want to be treated like a criminal, then by all means, go to barclays. in the end, after they grilled me for half an hour, they finally rejected my application for a basic account.
