Do you have an academic advisor at uni who you can talk to about this? Or you could email/phone the department at uni, they probably have a school office and admin staff who will be there in holiday time and can advise you on what to do and who to contact.
I know people who have taken years out during their degree's for medical reasons so it does happen, and as it is an emergency they should be sympathetic towards your situation. But contact them as soon as you can to find out for sure.

No i don't mean that, it's just that the people i know who have taken years out have been for emergencys and illness. I can't see any reason why they wouldn't let you take the year out, you are paying for it and they want your money after all! But different uni's prob have different regulations about things like this which is why you need to contact the department to find out. Have you tried looking on the website for info?
Also remember that if you get a grant/loan you need to contact the student finance people as well.
