I have to determine the functional group of an unknown organic compound. Is there a 'wet test' for esters? Because all I can think of is their 'fruity' smell but I want something more conclusive. If a 'wet test' does exist could you explain the practical and theory behind it. Thanks!

Anyone?

You can hydrolyse an ester into it's organic acid and alcohol parts: add sodium hydroxide - add the indicator phenolphthalein, and heat: if an ester is present the solution will turn from pink to colourless.
