Do non-ukcat universities require a lot of work experience to compensate? Is it more competitive to get into these uni's?

Is it just me or some answers from assessementday.co.uk in VR are wrong? IE:

'Well-nourished children are more likely to study harder for exams. Which is why some parents have been concerned with the poor nutritional value of school dinners. But that may be changing as childhood obesity continues to get worse and the government starts to notice. The government has started to promote better food labelling to help people cut down on their salt, fat and sugar intake. The problem is money though; it is difficult for a school to serve good food on such a tight budget.''

Children who eat healthily will perform better in exams.

I said cannot say, they said not true. And there are plenty other questions like that, not true for no reason.
Just writing here so i can follow the post thank you
Anybody know about any free UKCAT practice papers? I can only find the two on the site, which I've done to death. I've got my test on Thursday, so a quick reply would be appreciated.

Thanks
I think on the Medify Website there is a free trial. It's not terribly awe-inspiring and only has about 5 questions for each section, but at least it is something!

Also, here's a link to another thread on TSR with some useful resources. http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=621992

Hi!

I'm not sure if this site has already been posted  but http://www.getintomedicine.co.uk/ukcat-practice-questions.php also has a lot of great Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning and Decision Analysis questions (and answers...duh :s-smilie:).
:danceboy: :elefant: :groovy: :bunny:
In each section it also tells you how long it should take you to finish answering all of the questions if you want to time yourself (the pages don't come with a timer). I hope this helps!

I tried booking a test and realised that i can sit it as late as 24th Sept but the fee goes up to £75. Don't know coz I was told I had to do before Sept. And is there a book I can use to revise. I dnt like the practice questions it takes too long and you can't resume if you ran out of time. Am even thinking of not revising at all and just do the test. What are u expected to get ?? Marks or just pass or fail?

There is a UKCAT book that you can buy:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/380976013955?limghlpsr=true&hlpv=2&ops=true&viphx=1&hlpht=true&lpid=108&device=c&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108
Now I know some of you have probably been stressing about the UKCAT seen as the majority of unis in the country rely on your separate subtest scores or overall average when deciding whether to give you an interview, offer etc. However, after all my stressing and various breakdowns throughout the summer before my UKCAT, I've decided to pass on all my knowledge to you all.

Firstly, DO NOT STRESS! I think now that I have experienced the whole UKCAT stress, I feel like it is slightly overexaggerated with all the horror stories and rare exceptional scores that everyone hears about it.

I would suggest that you bookn your UKCAT for during the summer holiday definitely after results day. This is obviously helpful because from your results you can tell whether you still want to pursue medicine or whether you even can pursue it straight. Secondly, although some people detest the idea of having to revise during the summer, it's really helpful because you can never really stop revising from exams (obviously greatly reduced) and it's also better because attempting to revise during one of the most important academic years in your life is crazy difficult. Teachers won't prioritise you and it's doubtful your school will allow you to take time off, so truly summer is the best time to complete it.

Depending on your character, you can still go out and be social as long as you ensure you complete at least two hours of revision everyday. I myself took various days off revision and was working part-time during revision but just made sure I compensated for it on the days I did spend to do revision. On one day, I did about 500 practise questions just to compensate for taking a day and a bit off.

Often people ask when to start revising, I think as long as you have about 5/6 weeks of revision for at least 2/3 hours per day, you will be fine. Like I said before these can be spaced out as long as you have some intense revision for the last 8/9 days before your exam. However, I strongly suggest to let loose a little and not go too ham with revision as this can greatly affect your performance; breaks and days off are important.

Lastly, revison material.
DO NOT REVISE FROM UKCAT BOOKS!
The UKCAT is a computerised exam with an online calculator so it is truely a waste of time. I find that the people who revise from books often have to spend at least twice as much time revising to get used to the conditions. A computer programme I swear by is MEDIFY. You go online and create and account for a reasonable price and it provides you with a ridiculous amount of practice questions, 3 mocks at different levels of difficulty and it's recently introduced a series of timed questions. I used this every single day and it really helps as it shows you an analysis of your ability in different types of questions and tells you how many questions you have attempted per day.

This programme saved my life and is the only form of revision I would recommend to anyone as it has been created to portray exactly what the UKCAT is like, calculator and all. If you can succeed on Medify then you can acheive a great UKCAT score. I did the easy mock after I had done a lot of revision just to assess my progress, the medium mock a few days before the exam and the hard mock on the day of the exam to prepare me. I suggest to only atempt the mocks in the last 10 days before the exam as they can only be attempted once.

My UKCAT went amazing thanks to Medify, my highest score was 780 in Abstract Reasoning and my lowest score was 620 in Verbal Reasoning; I got 685 as an average overall and I am extremely happy.

Hope my post has helped;
GOOD LUCK!

Here are some links to free questions that are similar to those that come up in the UKCAT, or at least provide practice for those skills tested in the UKCAT. Some are more relevant that others, but I hope that they will give you a general feel and some practice for each of the subtests. If you come across any more sites that I have not included or any broken/incorrect/repeated links, do post and I shall update the list and +rep you. Recently added posts are highlighted. Good luck everyone

This thread has now been integrated into the UKCAT section of the Medicine TSR wiki and is therefore no longer a sticky :frown:  This includes a list of universities that use the UKCAT and how they use it, and can be found here.

I couldn't agree less. I got two second hand UKCAT books which cost me round 7 quid total. While practising QR i just used an untimed version of the test from the official UKCAT site and used their calculator.
Other sections... come on, clicking a proper answer and the 'next' button is not a rocket science and free online resources are just enough.
I'm not saying online courses are bad, they are good and help you get familiar with the format but so do official UKCAT resources..
I'm just saying you can spend less than a tenner and still get a great score. I got 780.
Good luck all

Hey B

Yes booked it for the 15th August so I'm thinking of subscribing perhaps a month before to Medify. Do you find out score straight after the test too ?

Yes, they will print it off straight afterwards. I'm a mature student, and I've booked mine for the first testing day.

Nice  I sat the test four years ago in year 12, but I didn't take it seriously + coupled with a poor ethic resulted in achieving a score of 625.

I've booked it for the first test date, and if I get a "decent" score then it'll allow me to build upon my application throughout the summer. If not, I'll apply for something else.

Not too sure. Where are you hoping to apply to?
Hey

How does the Medify thing work

I've decided to do a one week session with Medify

Do I book it, and can I start doing the actual mock practice later in the summer?

Or will the course start as soon as I pay?

Thanks
