Extended Reading - Computer Science

What i was wondering is, some people say that at university you must do extended reading in order to keep up. For example, you get a lecture on monday and the teacher says right now go and read page 56 + 57 + 58 (or woteva!!) so that next week we can jump straight in to the lecture and talk about what you have read. Then obviously if you havent then you will be bheind the next week

Does this apply to a computer science course, or is it more english and other degreees?

thanks

Some lecturers do tell you to read certain pages or chapters of textbooks, but in reality nobody ever does (and I'd imagine the lecturers are aware of this!)

I don't think I've ever done any 'extended reading' and I've got along fine. Once or twice I've looked something up in a textbook while trying to understand it for coursework or revision.

My Programming and Electronics lecturers both did this at various points.

As for the rest of the course, it might not be essential, but it will certainly help you to stand out when the exams come round.
