I was just wondering where people find out how to write their CVs (and cover letters for that matter)? I am one of those who gives feedback pretty regularly on our Ultimate CV & Cover Letter thread, and time and again we see people who have some idea of the kind of information they're expected to put down but who make many of the same really basic mistakes. So to help me understand where this lack of information is originating, could people please post where they first found out how to write a CV, and anywhere else they've used subsequently (e.g. school, Connexions office, family, friends, websites (if so, which?), university careers service). Thanks

I got a job in a large company where I was in HR, so reading cv's every day. These then gave me the inspiration of what to write in mine before I applied for my current job.

I don't think that is cheating

That's an interesting one - not cheating at all! If you don't mind me asking, how did you manage to get the job in the first place with no CV? Was it just an application form you had to fill in or something?

My mother is one of the senior managers for this nationwide company, and they heard about me through there....

And then that put me on the employment ladder, with excellent refrences (some of which are still used today!)

I did have to do an application form and application process (incl. interview) but still got through!
