Default Cost of Accomodation

Alright, having looked through prospectuses (prospecti?) & internet sites, i can't find out how much accomodation is going to cost at Oxford. Ill be starting in October (if Alevels go according to plan) and will be staying in-college (trinity, specifically), and would like to know how much it'll cost (roughly) per week or per term.

It varies an awful lot by college, so I'm afraid none of us are likely to be able to give you a definite answer (don't think we have any Trinitarians on the boards). It can vary from ~£800 a term at Jesus (one of the very cheapest) to £1300 in the en suite rooms at Pembroke.

Have a look at the Oxford Alternative Prospectus - if I remember rightly, there are little information boxes on each of the college pages, with facts and figures including termly rent.

* Just checked - it appears that the rent is £1020 per term at Trinity. I guess there will be some variation in prices from one year to the next, though (not sure if the alternative prospectus uses this year's figures or the probable figures for next year).

But be careful - some of them are out of date even in this brand new edition. Most colleges are generally in the right "place" - i.e. if they look cheap then they are cheap - but the exact figure may be out by 5% or so.

Aye, the price I've been given by my college differs by about £130/term from the price given in the alternative prospectus. It's close-ish, though.

is it cheaper to cook yourself (ie self catered halls) or rather to live in catered halls?

It would depend on how much the college meals are priced and whether there is actually a choice. For example, when I started at Worcester last October, I was one of the few first years who had access to kitchen facilities. So most people had no choice about whether they could self-cater or not!

Food prices vary a lot from college and you may not have the option. At jesus all food is PAYG but there's no self catering in 1st year. At Teddy Hall there are small kitchens, but you have a certain amount of breakfast and dinner credit that you have to pay for upfront. It's unlikely to be a question you get much choice in.

If youre a decent cook (ie can cook things from scratch quite happily) then its usually cheaper to self cater. I quite often cook and between a couple of us it works out at slightly over a pound a head most of the time (which is just ludicrously cheap considering the quantities I eat). Hall in comparison is still cheap, but a 3 course meal in hall will set me back somewhere around £2.50-3 (assuming I dont choose the most expensive stuff). Its more a convenience thing. If I have an essay to write and I dont have a spare hour then Ill go to hall, but cooking can be good fun if you have the time to spare.

On another note, not all colleges have decent cooking facilities so youd have to check that out.

Last year my rent was £970/term which included 8 weeks + 0th week free

It tends to be the case that the bigger colleges that house students for all 3 years are the ones that can provide cooking facilities. Colleges where only the first years live in and the rest are in annexes are unlikely to have kitchens that you can use. That said they're more likely to have good cooking facilities for the later years (i.e. whereas 1st years at LMH can cook, but the best it ever gets is a hob and a fridge, 1st years at Jesus can't - but in 2nd and 3rd year you have a full kitchen - fridge, freezer, oven, hobs etc)

You could email the accountants at each college you are interested in with questions like this? Although, even their estimations will only be estimations...

Cooking will generally always be cheaper. But to make it cheaper you can't have too much variety in meals. Hall will often provide a meal of three courses you could never make cheaply for £2.50-£3.50. I think the best situation is to mix and match.

Regardless, you can't decide now what you will do. Your friendship group will have a 'thing' they do. They might eta in hall together, they might cook together and that is more likely to dictate what you also do.

Uh why... the rents for Jesus this year were decided in this term's rent negotiations which happen in April / May time. I'm pretty sure that's the same for every college. Why do you think it would only be an estimate?

I'm sorry, it's because I don't have an offer for this year, I'm just an applicant this year, so I was referring to fees as of autumn 2009, which, when I emailed the accountants of the colleges I was interested in, they said they couldn't be entirely sure about. I realise that the thread starter and everyone else were referring to fees as of autumn 2008 though.
