Exclamation TSR reading list: The results and discussion thread.

The Results!

Beowulf - Anonymous authorship.
Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen
Things Fall Apart - Chinua Achebe. (Just because )

Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte.
Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte.
A Clockwork Orange - Anthony Burgess.

(The rest of the B's received two votes each; I thought it would be fair to use a difference author, as the other two were also by Burgess).

The Plague - Camus
Heart of Darkness - Conrad The Secret Agent - Conrad. If you have any complaints, speak to JW .

The Divine Comedy - Dante.
Great Expectations - Charles Dickens.
A Tale of Two Cities - Charles Dickens. (Although not in the vote, I think we all should read this).
Optional:
Crime and Punishment or Devils - Dostoyevsky. (Because Dostoyevsky was a close third :^_^.
The Waste Land - T.S. Eliot .
Middlemarch - George Eliot.

A Room With A View -E. M. Forster.
The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Brighton Rock - Graham Greene.
Lord of the Flies - William Golding.

Jude the Obscure - Thomas Hardy.
Catch-22 - Joseph Heller.

The Cider House Rules - John Irving.
The world according to Garp - John Irving.

A Portrait of the Artist as A Young Man - James Joyce
Ulysses - James Joyce
The Turn of the Screw - Henry James.
(The two Joyce books won but I'm going to keep James in if you don't want to read two books by Joyce ).

The File on H - Kadare's
Girl, Interrupted - Susanna Kaysen

The Unbearable Lightness of Being - Milan Kundera (optional)
Sons and Lovers or Lady Chatterley's Lover - D.H. Lawrence (It's up to you).
To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee.

The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini (*sniffle*, I need to learn to say no that's it, no more )!

Rebecca - Daphe Du Maurier.
All My Sons - Arthur Miller.
Optional:
Atonement - Ian McEwan. (I'm putting this in as I have read All My Sons to death).

Paradise Lost - John Milton (ONLY if MSB takes part)

Lolita - Vladamir Nabokov.
Thus Spoke Zarathustra - Friedrich Nietzsche.

1984 - Orwell.
Animal Farm - Orwell.
Metamorpheses - Ovid.
(Again, the Orwell novels won but you can read Ovid if you like).

The Bell Jar - Sylvia Plath.
If, like me, you have studied The Bell Jar, you can read Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams: Short Stories, Prose, and Diary Excerpts (Plath), instead.
Symposium or The Republic - Plato. (You decide!) Read both, if you like.

Confessions of an English Opium-Eater - Thomas de Quincey.
Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra - Don Quixote.

All Quiet on the Western Front - Erich Remarque.
Une Saison en Enfer (A Season in Hell) - Arthur Rimbaud.

Catcher in the Rye - J.D Salinger.
Hamlet or Macbeth - William Shakespeare.
(Although Hamlet won, you can read either play. I, for one, will be reading Macbeth as I read Hamlet at least 10 times last year).

Vanity Fair - William Makepeace Thackeray.
Collection of short stories - Tolstoy.

War and Peace - Leo Tolstoy (they made me )

Rabbit, Run - John Updike.

The Aeneid - Virgil.
Zadig - Voltaire.

The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde.
To the Lighthouse - Viginia Woolf.

Soul Mountain - Gao Xingjian.

Memoirs of Hadrian - Marguetire Yourcenar.
Collected Works - Yeats.

Optional (as did not receive many votes):

The Bible - The King James Bible in the Standard Revised Version - Genesis, Job, Song of Solomon, Isaiah and Matthew.

Laus .

What do you think?

You do not have to read the novels in any particular order. Why don't you print off the list and cross each one out when you have finished it? This thread is for discussing the novels we are reading; what we think of each novel, the novels we enjoyed/disliked. It's a general encouragement thread, too! This isn't a race but I'm going to try to read as many as possible before I start uni (in October).

Tell me who wants to do this and I shall put a member list here a bit later.

I would but I'm busy reading War and Peace atm - plus I refuse to plough through Zarathustra (why did you pick that one when there are sooo many better Nietzsches?) and there seems to be a distinct lack of Capote.

Nice list, only one I slightly disagree with is the choice of Jude over Tess of the D'Ubervilles, but I'm biased :o

I'll be added!

Finished In Cold Blood a couple of weeks ago, that was an absolutely amazing book. Disturbing as hell, but in an... amazing way.

I shall bold what I have already read, and see if it's even worth doing the challenge.

EDIT:

Instead of having that long list, I haven't read the following, including optional:

A Room With A View -E. M. Forster.

Brighton Rock - Graham Greene.

The Turn of the Screw - Henry James

The File on H - Kadare’s

Confessions of an English Opium-Eater - Thomas de Quincey.

Rabbit, Run - John Updike.

Memoirs of Hadrian - Marguetire Yourcenar.

I shan't italicize them as I'm too lazy.

I'm too lazy to go through and pick out the ones I haven't read. I've read a fair few of them, that's all I can say.

I'm very hurt Dostoevsky didn't make on the final list, and instead two Dickens did.

I want to read Breakfast at Tiffany's! There's no decent library near me. Obviously no access to school library in summer, and Amazon is slowly bankrupting me. This is liable to become a problem when I'm working through three separate reading lists. Anyone have any suggestions?

No, I just want to be unhelpful and complain about the omission of the book.

I mean, come on, really.
