Default help, torn between 3 subjects - how do i choose?

Hey,

I wonder if anybody knows of a website that can help:

Im trying to narrow down my university choices and am having great difficulty in even deciding which subject(s) to do

at the moment im doing 5 A levels - Law, Economics, Business Studies, Psychology & Geography and have been predicted A's in all of them - i will probably drop Geography or Psychology next year - but want to do a degree in one of the first 3.

Trouble is i cant decide which one : (

ive tried doing it based on unis but some of the top ones offer all 3

One of my teachers said there used to be a website whereby you could answer questions and it would 'suggest' which degree would be best for you.

trouble is he cant remember wat it was.

Does anybody have any suggestions - either for that or any other way to choose?

thanks

I wouldn't advise these websites... it's just based on answers that you already know yourself.

Do you know what acreer you want to work for? - Choose the best degree for this.
Are you likely to change your mind? Choose a degree that gives you more opportunities.
I think you should decide what course to do based on course not on uni. A fried of mine chose a course based on the uni she wanted to go and doesn't enjoy it and wishes she hadn't

You'll struggle to get into a "top uni" for Economics without A-level Maths at the very least, so you can probably rule out Economics unless you are planning on doing Maths next year. As for Business or Law, I don't know enough about them to help you much but I thought that they didn't recommend that you do Law at A-level if you want to do it at university.

I think that helps, thats online ...
http://www.ucas.ac.uk/students/befor...y/whattostudy/

If you go on that link, about half way down the page there is a red hyperlink to the stamford test.

Have you tried researching what you'll study on each of the courses?

You seem to be falling between two stools - quantity and quantity. If you are aiming at a top university you need to guarantee getting as close to AAAa in relevant academic subjects as possible. Business studies and law are not very helpful in this respect. Most universities are not all that keen on a law A level for law, and business studies is not too much use (in this context) for anything. You'd do better to drop those subjects and concentrate on getting top grades. If you want to study economics at a top university you might want to swap something else for maths.

I believe what you're looking for is the Stamford Test. The link is on this page:

http://www.ucas.ac.uk/students/befor...y/whattostudy/

It's not perfect, and can't tell you exactly what you 'should' do, but it has lots of questions along the lines of 'do you enjoy do x?' 'does y interest you?' etc.

Hope this helps a little! Perhaps it would be good to try and apply for as many of these subjects as you think you can, then as the year progresses you'll have more time to figure out what you'd prefer to study?

Go for Law you can't get into economics without maths usually unless you are doing joint honours. You can do a law and economics joint honours which sounds perfect for you; but you need to show capability in Maths, your problem is lack of essay writing subjects for law and lack of maths for economics but it is certainly possible.

NOTE: Law and Business are seen by universities as doss if I am honest with you.

I'm studying law at the moment, and agree with the others...if you want to do a law degree you usually have to have competitive A-Levels in academic subjects, since law as a profession is so competitive in itself (therefore you stand less of a chance of getting a worthwhile training contract if you go to a lower standard uni). Whilst law a-level might not put too any admissions tutors off (the only places I know of that outright reject it are Cambs and LSE...I'm at Oxford and several people I know did it), business studies is seen as a kind of 'soft' option.

I would concentrate on getting the best grades that you can in the more "traditional" A levels, so would suggest you don't drop psychology. Maybe think of losing or spending less time on Business and Law. Many students also seem fixed on the idea that your degree choice almost dictates your career choice - it doesn't. Employers want a "good" degree from a "good" university so choose a subject you enjoy.

i) Check out the typical economics offers:
http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=619184

ii)Maths is pretty essential for doing economics at uni. (Even places that don't insist on it desire it.). So you are at a major disadvantage and that is not good when top places have 10-15 applicants per place. Hence if you are interested in econ look to take A-level maths next year.

iii)Drop Business Studies as nowhere good will give you credit for both bus and econ.

iv)Law is only valued if you apply for Law at uni. So unless you bloody sure that want to do law at uni drop that as well.

So that leaves:
Economics, Psychology, Geography, Maths.

(Sorry if this is not what you want to hear. But sounds to me like you were poorly advised by whoever let you take a number of unrespected (as well as duplicating) A-levels.

Your biggest problem with studying Economics at university is your lack of A-Level Maths. Even a lot of Management courses require A-Level Maths. So that said, your best bet with your current choices would be to drop A-Level Business Studies and aim for Law.

Unless you fancy taking up A-Level Maths in one year?
