Re: Sports Direct - Interview
I've just got back from a Sports Direct "Recruitment Day". Basically just walked into the store, asked about the interviews, they gave me a form to fill in, then a store manager from a different store interviewed me. I didn't get asked any sports questions, she didn't even look at my CV! I only want to work weekends (because I have work exp booked up all this summer and go to college during the week), one day at the most (didn't say the one day bit though), and the woman told me that might not be possible...eh?! Er, casual sales assistant love...it means exactly what the job title is!? Casual! Not looking hugely forward to my induction tomorrow, might get told that I won't get the job because I'm "too inflexible" with the hours.. =/

Re: Sports Direct - InterviewIf you are too inflexible compared to others, apparentely they only have to give you a minimum of 5 hours a week. I did this at some other place and then i got told there was no point in having me, so sacked me hahaha(Original post by calumcvet)

Re: Sports Direct - InterviewOoh is it a minimum of 5 hours?! Thats alright, i'll be earning 46p more than I get on my paper round XD Well, its not alright...stupid minimum wage grrr.(Original post by Jessikar)

I'm awaiting a phone call from the store manager telling me my shifts (or not lol if I get "released"), had the induction today, so many bloody forms to fill in! Had to fill in about 30 forms =/ And they only had 1 size for the uniform trousers: large! So we all got free store stock :P I think it was free anyway...it better bloody had be!
I don't like the "you only get paid on the last working day of the month" idea either...I'm just going to take the job for now, sick of my paper round, I'm still going to keep a lookout for other jobs that crop up though
Preferably ones where I get paid more!

Help please!! Sports Direct and Part Time Job Queries?!
Hey,
I've just been to a Sports Direct induction day where we didn't actually get told anything useful, had to fill in 35 health and safety forms though! Soo, I'm kinda relying on you guys for some juicy info please
How long are the shift patterns at Sports Direct? Namely the minimum hours and the max hours you could work in a day, and what time do they start?
Can you book the odd day off at the weekend? (I've put down that I can only work weekends, but as my girlfriend lives 30 miles away, I obv want to take the odd day off at the weekend so we can see each other!) And can this apply for all part time weekend jobs?
How long do you need to work to get a pay rise? Tbh, £3.53 minimum wage is s**t whichever way you look at it, and the main reason I'm going for a new job is so I earn more than I get on my paper round, otherwise it's pointless!
What are other good employers where you earn more than £4 if you're a 17 year old? Maccies isn't an option, my girlfriend works for them and hates it, plus I don't do fast food - only Subway, bcos they're healthy! :P
Does it look bad if you start a job then a week later find a better job, apply for it, get it, then leave to do that job?
I'm going to have to travel for a job, bcos none of the shops in the s***ty small town where I live have jobs going, and the transport links are crap to where Sports Direct is, so I'm already looking for a new job before I've even started!
Thanks all
EDIT Just to say before I'm blamed of being an idiot, I did ask the store manager all of these questions at the induction yesterday, but he either was clueless or didnt give me a straight answer - not too reassuring, I'm sure you'll agree! ThanksLast edited by calumcvet; 18-07-2009 at 13:26. -

Ok, I have no idea about sport direct so these answers are for general retail

Usually minimum would be a 4 hour shift with no breaks and maximum is 9.5 hours with 1.5 hours for breaks so a 7 hour shift.
Can you book the odd day off at the weekend? (I've put down that I can only work weekends, but as my girlfriend lives 30 miles away, I obv want to take the odd day off at the weekend so we can see each other!) And can this apply for all part time weekend jobs?
Pretty much no, because the shop is going to need most it's staff in on it's busiest days! If your not going to work these days, who will? You usually do the same shifts every week so you unlikely to get the job over someone who will do every weekend.

Some shops now aren't giving out pay rises due to current economic climate so it's difficult to say.
What are other good employers where you earn more than £4 if you're a 17 year old? Maccies isn't an option, my girlfriend works for them and hates it, plus I don't do fast food - only Subway, bcos they're healthy! :P
You could maybe try supermarkets? I worked at next and I got more than £4 an hour but when I look back it now it wasn't really worth it.
Does it look bad if you start a job then a week later find a better job, apply for it, get it, then leave to do that job?
Yes, and it's very annoying for your employer who will have invested money in you for training etc but people still do it anyway.

Re: I got this email from Sports world / Sports direct, What does it mean?
Basically, just turn up to the store with your CV, ask one of the guys at the store entrance about the interviews/recruitment day, then you'll get given a form to fill in saying what hours you can do, when that's done you taken to the store manager who asks you questions like hours, do you know anything about Sports Direct (say they're the number one sports retail chain in the UK...don't know if its correct, but its what my interviewer told me on Thursday when I had my interview), then he/she will probs tell you to come to the induction and bring colour photocopies of your passport and National Insurance card.
I had my induction yesterday, there were 25 people there, I guess everyone who got interviewed got in. You get given a uniform and you have to fill in 30 odd health and safety forms. If its a new store, you start on minimum wage, like me, £3.53 per hour, which is s**te. I'm just probs going to stay until I find a better paid job closer to home, its experience after all, and who knows, I may like working there! -
Re: sport direct
You need to enter your details before you go to the induction... You don't need to apply for a National Insurance do you? I just got mine through the post out of the blue when I was 16, I thought it was something saying I'd been fiddling tax or something lol, bit hard when I don't pay tax :P
Preferably ones where I get paid more!
