if my firm/insurance has a unsuccessful next to it does that mean i have no chance of getting a place if i call them up on the day?

It does usually mean you have very little chance of convicing them as an unsuccessful would indicate they have already made their mind up.

However, I would just call them anyway, you have to nothing to lose, they will just say no again at most and you may have a very small chance of getting them to convicing them.

So in conclusion, yes it's unlikely of you getting a place but call them up if you are desperate to go there and test your luck.

It means you need to think carefully before phoning them, and decide what to say. Try to think of good reasons why they should pick you; it may help to look again at your PS for this or to talk to your teachers.
