Why does everyone think there is a shortage of doctors in this country??!

Nearly everyone on here has this misguided notion that there is this vast shortage of doctors! With the number of applicants averaging 350 per post, the vast influx from overseas and expanding med schools how can this ever be the case?

It must be one of the worst fallicies knocking around. The Government must stop new overseas doctors inflitrating the system as they are making the chances of local graduates (even less than would be without them!) getting jobs difficult.

I think that people say that there is a shortage because the UK doesn't produce enough doctors to be self-sufficient. I was told by one of the medical school open days that with all the new places the UK should train 7000 new doctors every year, but 10000 are needed.

but surely the high applicants / job ratio is mainly for the most competitive of specialities and locations (!) there are still vast GP shortages in places doctors don't want to work, several practices in wales have had to be centralised and an A&E department in llannelli (sp?) has had to move to part time because there aren't any doctors to fill the gaps.

since the government vastly expanded the number of students in training, a lot of these haven't gone through the system to fill the lesser-saught consultant posts.

Overall, there's certainly not a shortage of drs - otherwise some of the one's currently without a post would have one!!! The problem is 'backlogs' in the system.

The UK is unique in 'guaranteeing' all grads a PRHO post, but unfortunately I don't think this will be sustainable. The influx of doctors from abroad means there are more applicants than jobs. eek

I hardly think Scotland is representative of the rest of the country where over 80% of doctors practice! Also A&E is only one of the 35 odd specialities out there.

K So go and work in Scotland if you want to. Also if you want to believe everything in the media then go ahead. Not exactly the same as reality. The BBC had for example an article about unemployed docs in the South East that was printed in a medical journal. So there is always a different side.
