MSc in International Business and Emerging Markets
Hi,
i've applied to this course and i'm still awaiting reply, however i would like to know if anyone else here attended or heard anything about the course. Is it interesting, what are the career prospects etc. etc.
I already have an offer from Durham Financial Management so if i do get accepted into Edinburgh i'll have to make a choice. -
Re: MSc in International Business and Emerging MarketsThere are probably 10 current Edinburgh students who regularly post on this forum. We're all undergraduates meaning it is highly unlikely that anyone will appear who has studied your course, sorry, although if you have any general questions about the university or the city do ask us(Original post by dondiego)
nobody in the whole wide forum?

Re: MSc in International Business and Emerging Markets
I applied in January and just got an unconditional offer which I accepted. This program will be good - I have very high expectations, especially with regards to the real-life experience they provide.
I am coming from Norway with 3 years of work experience. How about you guys? -
Re: MSc in International Business and Emerging Markets
thanks for the tip off oxymoronic. I actually just submitted my app to edinburgh yesterday so I guess I wont be hearin back from the admission office any time soon. but thats ok Im also waitin for a decision at King's and flippin the coin to decide whether to apply to Warwick or St. Andrews.
Would be grateful however if you could tell me a bit about student accomodation in Edinburgh. I enjoy city life a great deal so I assume Id prefer to search for housing in the downtown area... altho thats probably gonna cost big bucks. hows the housing market beyond student residences? is it easy to find flatmates and stuff? Also have u got around to attend a career fair? whats it like?
@riskhunter:when u say real-life experience you are referring to internship possibilities or student life? Cool to hear u got an uncon offer. good on ya. this is the only business course im applyin to as my other options are programs in human resource management. totally dig the "emerging markets" bit. im from peru and got 2+ years work experience in CSR and HRM at UN agencies and financial institutions. -
Re: MSc in International Business and Emerging MarketsTake a look at the accommodation thread at the top of the Edinburgh forum by a user called nearlyheadlessian, on the second post there is loads of information about finding private accommodation. After first year, everyone lives in privately rented accommodation meaning there is a huge market of private flats beyond the ones which are owned by the university which are allocated specifically to first years. The university does have post graduate accommodation too, which might interest you. Again, help towards finding flatmates is contained in the thread I've pointed you towards.(Original post by dondiego)

Edinburgh has no "downtown" area as such - its a really small city and you can walk across the city centre in about 45 minutes. As a student it is highly unlikely you'd live anywhere outside of the city centre meaning anywhere you are likely to live will put you within about 20 minutes walk of the university, which is in the city centre.
I've been to the careers fair, yes (I'm a final year undergraduate) although by the time I went I had already made decisions and submitted applications for next year meaning I probably didn't get as much out of it as other students

Re: MSc in International Business and Emerging Markets
cool beans - really appreciate ur insight pal.
just one more question id really like to get off my chest: how the part-time job market? been doin the numbers and as u can imagine, tuition alone for postgrad courses at the business school are a little steep for an international student's pocket so... what are the odds one could find part-time employment -meaning 10-15h per week- to ease the financial burden and help oneself get by?
thanks a lot! -

Finding a job is relatively easy if you're flexibile with what you want to do, especially if you have experience. There are no end of pubs/clubs/bars and they are always on the look out for new staff, although obviously this entails working until 4am and normally at the weekend which might not be too fun. Otherwise there are plenty of cafes and shops... it depends what you want to do really - there are jobs out there, particularly if you have certain skills (ICT, for example) or speak additional languages as clearly, Edinburgh is a very touristic city.
In the UK at the moment jobs are harder to get than they perhaps have been in the past, but for just basic part time unskilled work you should be okay. Its the graduate schemes etc which have been hardest hit.q -
Re: MSc in International Business and Emerging Markets
Hi all , I am new to this forum and need some advise/inputs !!
I am applying for the mentioned course and need to get some feed back about the course from those who have done that or doing it. If possible, drop me some insights on career prospects and living in Edinburgh. I have 4yrs of exp in fashion retail industry in buying/merchandising. This course looked apt to me to get a shift from my sector and career advancement.
also, hows the fashion sector in Edinburgh, any part time jobs?
I am from India, working in Dubai and have plans to work in India after this course. So what I am looking from this course is intense academics, personal development and cultural understanding. Will it help me in attaining my goals?? is this the right place??
would appreciate your thoughts here.Last edited by pragmaticdreamer; 02-06-2012 at 08:30.
