Me and my boyfriend are going to get checked for STDs. I'm a bit nervous though; does it involve people prodding around down there? Or do I just have to pee in a cup or something? Has anyone here had one? Thanks
It can be an invasive or non invasive as you like tbh. For girls anyway. I'm guessing every centre is different but I can tell you what happened when I went. You can get checked for the more common ones (chlymidia, gonorhoea etc) by a urine test. You basically just pee in a pot and leave They will first though ask you a load of questions about who you have slept with the the last 6 months and what happened. (You can lie if you want I guess if you're uncomfortable talking about it, but tbh there's no need to be, they're seen and heard far worse). There's also a more thorough examination where you lie down with your pants off and they take a swab from inside. (That hurt me tbh, but some say it's fine).
If you're worried about any of the more serious STDs (HIV, hepititus) they can do a blood check, but tbh unless you've slept or whatever with someone "high risk" they won't do this as standard. High risk means someone from Africa or somewhere where HIV and things like that are more common.
It's similar for boys really but obviously taking a swab would be different.
In most cases they have a "no news is good news" policy, so if they find something they will let you know (you can get your results by text if you like!) but if you have the all clear you hear nothing.
For boys, the swab test is where they insert a weird thing up your urethra briefly, and like Donna said for girls they take a swab from the vagina. Although I didn't know you could just use a urine sample.
guys imagine if someone is sleeping with only one guy who is clean and has had a blood test which was like all fine and the girl goes to get a blood test will the blood test in any way show that the girl has had sex?

EH!? . . . . didnt understand a word of this . . . .
If i think its what your trying to say - no, they can't tell you've had sex . . . . .

Read this, might point you into the right direction for what your asking.

I've had the tests done at the doctors and at an actual GUM clinic.
At the clinic i was firstly asked a load of questions, about why i wanted to get checked, who i'd been sleeping with, if i had any symptoms that needed checking out.. and she decided accordingly wat to do based on that. I then went for a wee. Then went into another room where i had all sorts of things done. I had a blood sample. A throat swab - that one was really scratchy! I had swabs done - i don't think it's that bad.. i wasn't at all embarrassed. You get opened up a bit and a few cotton wool buds whipped round and your done. Although the one from my wee hole (excuse my lack of medical terminology lol) kind of hurt.. hurt when i went for a wee afterwards anyway!! She checked there and then quickly under the microscope to see if there were any intitial signs to suggest i had chlamydia etc.. and because there wasn't sent me home. She asked me back the following week because i was having problems - but normally they don't.
At the doctors - i'd gone in with burning pains when i wee and bleeding during sex so she took swabs there and then and a wee sample obviously, because i wasn't prepared for it at all i kind of tensed up so that hurt a bit more than the last time. But she started treating me for chlamydia there and then because that's what she thought it was.. but it wasn't...
They don't just test for STIs by the way.. they check for BV and thrush and things too.. or at least they did with me
It's not so bad, better to be safe than sorry as they say.
Forgot to mention - at the GUM clinic i had an internal examination too.. so gloved fingers, lube - feeling around etc.. didn't hurt really though.
i dont know why you didnt undertsand what i had posted but anyways you got the point !thanks
Because it was just one long sentence, with no punctuation in it and it just read like jibberish to me. After 3 times of re reading it, I got what you meant lol
Im not having ago at you, I genuinely have a problem understanding things and have to re read things over and over again to understand. It also doesn't help when the grammar/punctuation isn't good in what i'm trying to understand.

i think i need to get checked out after having unprotected sex, but i'm really scared
when you get to the doctors what do you ask them for?
and also will they ring you at home with the results?
obviously i wouldn't want my parents to know i was going for these checks
can you go somewhere that isn't your normal doctors?

they just ask you how many people you've slept with, who youve been sleeping with etc
you dont have to get your results sent home or call your house phone, you can get results through your mobile or email, its your choice coz of confidentiality
yeh find your local gum/sexual health clinic and they can do it all for you
and ppl posting about the swab up your weehole(!) yeh it kinda *stings* i suppose its coz nothings really supposed to be going up that hole, but i wouldnt say its painful (from a girls perspective)
Right this is what happened when I went. Firstly I went to the clinic and got told they were full and to come at 7am the next day. Came back at 8am next day and they said come back at one. Came back at one and didn't get interviewed til 4, finally got out at half 5! So be prepared.
Anyway, I went in, filled out a form with my name and address on. Then sat around a waiting room. I got called into an interview room where a doctor asked me how many people i'd slept with, why I was there (I just said I wanted a routine screening), had I slept with anyone from foreign countries and a couple of other things. Then she said she'd take swabs and do blood work (they do blood work in our GUM clinic as routine) but I told her I was scared of needles and she said that was ok, she wouldn't bother as I wasn't at high risk anyway.
So then I was taken into an exam room, undressed behind a curtain, hopped on the chair whilst chatting to a nurse. You get a paper towel to cover your modesty until the exam moment comes. The doctor came in, looked about a bit then put the speculum in and took two swabs (neither of which came from the urethra). Then that was it, I went home and haven't heard anything since so I guess i'm all healthy
