    Kanchipuram??

If so, buses every half an hour. Buses would be of crappy type but travel is like 2.5hrs & the road is very good.

Recently went to Kanchipuram for getting sarees for my sister.

I'd consider getting the train down to Heathrow and flying from there, as you can sometimes get flights way cheaper just by flying from London. You could even fly Manchester-London if you really wanted, but its really easy and cheap to go on the train.
Finn Air have got pretty cheap flights to Asia at the moment, with a stop over in Helsinki. As someone else has said, look at flying to Delhi then getting internal flights as thats a popular route so the prices will generally be cheaper.
Just stick it in expedia and see what comes up if you play around with arrival cities and dates.
