Changing my Accomodation.. :/ HELP
Hey.
I was wondering if anyone could be of any help.
I applied for my accomodation a while back (Took a year out and so did it and then just forgot about it really.) Although it seemed the right decision at the time, I'm now having major second thoughts.
The accomodation I applied for was Henry Price, for which I've been accepted. It'll cost around £3,500 a year, which seems quite a lot to me. The benefits are that it's on campus which is really convenient, looks really nice inside, and seems quite social with 8 or 9 sharing one kitchen unit.
Now however, Im thinking I should have chose Lupton, which was my second choice. Reasons for this being that its cheaper - £3000 a year (though I would most likely get a bus pass for £200) and I hear Headingly is meant to be amazing. Alot of people seem to be bigging up this place, and it has some nice green areas too.
Ok, and here's the final thing. Im guessing that most students from lower income backgrounds and public schools etc will be staying in lower priced accomodation, such as Lupton. Not that I have anything against Posher Kids, but from travelling etc I just tend to find I get on better with people from a similar background and have much more in common. Does anybody think Henry Price will have a fair bit of Rah Rah's there? And also I was thinking when it comes to getting a house the following year, people in Lupton may be on a similar wavelength in terms of money etc, as I really wont want to be paying too much.
Im really considering ringing up and asking to change. I dont know if its Last Minute nerves or that I really would be better off at Lupton. On top of that, does anyone think it would even be possible to change at such a late stage?
Cheers for any help guys.
Im seriously stressed!

Re: Changing my Accomodation.. :/ HELPI don't know if you can change, but if you can you'd be making making a good choice. I'm in Lupton this year (I was actually there last year too before I dropped out) and the people are so down to earth plus it's cheaper, in the middle of Headingley and has loads of events happening all the time, I'd definitely change to Lupton.(Original post by SaintCaz#5)

Re: Changing my Accomodation.. :/ HELP
I applied for Devonshire (cause of all the music rooms, facilities etc) and I got put in Lupton and am really looking forward to it anyway! It's cheaper, apparently it's got varied types of people, tons of grass, partiies and stuff. Chaaaaange ... join uuuusss ...

Re: Changing my Accomodation.. :/ HELP
Hey.
Thanks guys for all your comments.
I do agree life in the halls is what you make of it, but alot depends on the people you're around. If I only I had a crystal ball! I have two friends who both go the Same university, one who's flat didnt mix too well and isn't too keen on it all there, and one who gets on amazingly well with her roomies and absolutely loves Uni. I guess we're all in the same boat ...Fingers Crossed..
Still undecided however!

Re: Changing my Accomodation.. :/ HELP
Okay, as far as I'm aware you can ring up the Leeds accom. office and change your mind (Could be wrong but I'm 90% sure accomoffice has said that on the forum in the past)
I was in Henry Price from last September until June this year and there was no "rah" thing going on. I myself am a person who would be classed as coming from a lower income background, my parents live in a council house, my dad doesn't work and my mum works part time in a shop. I can say I did not feel out of place in HP at all
Whatever happens you will almost certainly get people in EVERY accommodation who tend to think they're pretty much better than the rest when they wave "daddies" credit card in your face - Unfortunately that's just what happens, and seems to happen more at University when you get the wider variety of social groups/people and personalities coming together
Whatever happens you have to remember that as is the case for everywhere, it's not the accommodation that will determine the social life, it's the people you live with. I'm not suggesting Henry Price is perfect, afterall, you could end up with 7 rude, unclean and generally horrible people, but don't base your choice on generalisations about various places. You should prioritise your criteria when it comes to where you want to live and work with it from there.
I'll tell you why I chose Henry Price, it's the only self catered accommodation on campus - and that's pretty much it. I'll admit I'm a lazy person and being able to wake up 15 minutes before a lecture in the Business School across the road is a God send! If that's your main criteria, stick with it. You said you would be buying a bus pass for £200, which means Lupton would be £300 cheaper. If your main criteria is a cheaper place then obviously the money you save in Lupton is worth it
That's a fair point, whether or not it would turn out like that I don't know. I can only point out things that I've experienced and I know that the people who joined up to get somewhere in my flat haven't gone anywhere rediculously expensive. Don't just think straight away that you would be moving in a house in your second year with flatmates either. I know plenty of people who couldn't stand living with people who they've been with in Henry Price for a yearAnd also I was thinking when it comes to getting a house the following year, people in Lupton may be on a similar wavelength in terms of money etc, as I really wont want to be paying too much.
(I guess I'd put myself in this category, although I got on with everyone in my flat extremely well, I decided to move into somewhere on my own). I also know a lot of people who have moved in with people on their courses rather than who was in their flat, you may find yourself in this position.
And for the record Henry Price has 2 large green parks on both sides of it - I get the impression people think it's in some kind of dense urban area

Re: Changing my Accomodation.. :/ HELP
I have a feeling that once you've been allocated it's pretty hard to change, apart from to the unpopular halls.
To be honest HP seems like a really nice halls. It overlooks St Georges Fields on campus, which is this secluded little park, its so nice. Then on the otherside you have Hyde Park, so a really nice location. And I don't think it has a reputation for attracting too many rah types (although Lupton will almost certainly be more 'laid back'). BUT money is definitely something that needs to be considered - I found it hard enough paying my £3200 rent. This obviously completely depends on each person, but if you think you'd struggle to afford it then that's a good reason to change (and one that the accom office accepts). -
Re: Changing my Accomodation.. :/ HELP
I would definitely give accommodation office a call, its not like you are trying to change to Leodis or one of the mega popular ones. Even if you cant change now you might well be able to change early in term. Lupton is great so its worth giving it a shot, you won't know until you ask, I always found accommodation office very friendly and helpful.
Did you go to Knowsley Road on Friday then Caz? -
Re: Changing my Accomodation.. :/ HELP
Thanks for all your help. I've took it all into consideration, and have decided to stick with Henry Price. I think it was just last minute worrying really, but I'm sure it'll be just fine
Rather looking forward to the prospect now.
And Magic medicine .. I didn't get to go the game on Saturday, sadly
I've just got back from travelling and have a grand total of £3 in my bank so life's not too fun at the moment. My dad's treated me though and paid for my weekend in London for Wembley so
Did you go? God it was close. I was convinced you guys had it (Im sure you did too..) A draw would have been a fair result for sure, though personally I thought you were the better team. We were lucky indeed. Good game though : )
