I did a search but I couldn't find an answer to this particular question. I always get really bad pains on the second day of my period. Unfortunately that day falls on the day I start school this year, and I really can't miss that day. So, I was wondering, what is the difference between Ibuprofen and Paracetamol? I've tried Paracetamol and it didn't really work. I can't go on the pill or anything like that because of another medication I'm taking.
Also, is it normal for your period to last for eight days, but still be regular (as in, it comes every three weeks)? Is there any natural way of making it shorter?

Thanks!
I'm the same as you. Ibuprofen is stronger than paracetemol, you can go to a chemist and get syndol over the counter, which is even stronger And my period comes every 3 weeks too, it's bloomin annoying! And seems to last about a week. If we're not normal, I hope someone will say now
Take mefenamic acid on that day. Get it from the Doctors. It is seriously amazing - i used to pass out and throw up from pain on my period and now it is compleltely bareable.
You could try feminex or whatever its called, that it designed for period pains.
I prefer ibuprofin but you can take that alongside paracetamol if you want. although dont take asprin with them (i cant remember which one it is so dont do it with either )
my period usually last 5 days, everyone has their own cycle. talk to your doctor about it to make sure whatever you take it good for you. I am not a big fan of medicine, so when I'm in pain i put a warm bean bag on my tummy.

Isn't it dangerous to take both at the same time? (Ibuprofen and paracetamol that is)

Can't exactly do that if I have to go to school, can I?

Plus i think 8 days is fine.
My periods used to make me faint too, and I found mefenamic acid didn't work
Doctor did say to me to buy one of those heating pads things you can get to put on your belly. Its supposed to be soothing when having bad periods. I know you can't exactly do that in school though, but its another thing you can do if you're at home and experience bad pains

lol I do it ^^ we have a microwave in school and I don't really care about the looks i get, I guess normal human beings wouldn't do that ^^
anyway whatever you think of taking talk to your doctor first
Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory, which is likely to be more useful for period pains than paracetamol. However, there are stronger and more effective anti-inflammatories (such as mefenaic acid) which you can get on prescription from your doctor.
Unfortunately I can't take them because they aggravate another condition I have, so my awful-period-pain regime is as follows:
Paracetamol and codeine (can't beat opiates!), but for as short a time as I can get away with because the codeine gives me constipation.
Heat - a hot water bottle when I'm at home, or stick-on Cura-heat pads which attach to your clothes (e.g. wear a vest and then no-one would know it's there) for when I'm at work.
A small TENS machine - it basically gives you teeny electrical shocks as a method of pain-relief. I'm not 100% convinced about it, but every little helps is my motto when it comes to my period pains. They're about £15 from Lloyds chemists, and you can clip them on to your clothes (so, again, you could hide it under a shirt or sweater). I warn you, though, it's an odd sensation - like being repeatedly pinged with elastic bands.
You can also get a magnet thing which is supposed to help with period pains. It's very small and again attaches to your clothes (which by this point may be getting fairly cluttered). I've only just got one of these and so far I'm nt convinced it's effective, and it was very expensive (about £30 from Superdrug), but if it helps it'll be worth it.
Finally - and this is more for good luck than anything else - a malachite pendant, as this crystal is thought to help with period pains.
Being on the Pill was great for me, so it's a shame you aren't able to take it as that was the thing which helped the most. But do talk to your doctor about a prescription for some anti-inflammatories such as mefenamic acid. One other tip - make sure you start taking them before your period starts. If you wait (as I used to when I was trying to take them but also not really wanting to because they'd cause me different issues) then you end up taking them too late and throwing them up before they've dissolved, and then you're stuffed.
Ibuprofen I'd be thinking along the same lines, paracetamol not so much (except inasfar as the throwing up thing might be an issue). And don't forget that ibuprofen, as an anti-inflammatory, can cause damage to the lining of your stomach so you need to take it with food, not on an empty stomach. But seriously, if the pain is that bad, get something stronger from your doctor.
