Monday am: Essex,UEA, Reading and Leicester still all in clearing.

Friday am: Morning Independent as same list as yesterday.
even down to still listing Southampton Economics and Politics which both UCAS and the Southampton website no longer list. I will leave it as No (2/3) but if interested you should obviously contact Southampton.

Please check out this post regularly for the current state of play:

What advise would you give To economics students who have not yet got a place?
i)Don't panic
ii)Do contact your firm/insurance and see if you can win them round. (Not very likely but you need to atleast try.) Mention evidence they do not have. e.g. your module marks. i.e. how close you were to a higher grade.
iii)Just because a uni not in clearing does not mean it has no places. (just that it does not want to advertise). Reasonable to ring round unis at the level of grades you achieved, even if they are not listed in clearing.
iv)check out what is in clearing:
http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13833180&postcount=39
v)Once you know the best offer you can get then decide if you want to re-apply next year.

What Top Unis are currently in clearing for straight economics for Uk/EU students?
No AAA/AAB unis
ABB unis: Essex,
And it is likely will take sub ABB students as they have done so in the past. In 2005/6
%below 320: 41%
%below 280: 19%
see this post for the full data set:
http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13809138&postcount=57

and what about BBB Unis. Which of them are currently in clearing for straight economics for Uk/EU students?
Only Swansea are.

And it is quite likely they will accept lower grades than BBB as their average student in 2006/7 had 278 points.
(Recall BBB is 300 points)

Great I have contacted a numberof unis and got more than 1 offer which should I take?/B]
If they have same typical offer then:
i)are they city or campus unis?
ii)How far are they from home?
Often people use the 2 hour rule:
More than that too far to take washing home
less than that and risk parents come unannounced on sunday morning....!!!

Should I take a GAP year and re-apply?
has to be your decision.
2 factors to consider:
i) How much better is your target uni than your current uni.
ii) How likely are you to get an offer from your Target.

I apologise in advance for any mistakes. Please let me know of any and I will attempt to fix them. Also the situation is (very!) dynamic both ways. So universities may get enough students and exit clearing. OR may discover they lack students and enter clearing. So please check UCAS yourself regularly

For details of what the rest of the numbers and codes mean check out the 2009 offers thread:http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=619184

Nice. You may want to cross St Andrews off as they're Scottish and not in clearing.

Cambridge don't do any clearing, so you should probs cross that off too.

Done. (I did realise that St Andrews was in Scotland I just missed it!)

I am sure you are correct but I will do all the English and Welsh and Northern Ireland unis together.

And I need to work out first what I am going to do about there being different lists for UK/EU and International students, before I update too many universities.
Reply 4
I have updated the table to reflect which unis went into clearing for economics related courses in 2007. The pattern is pretty clear:
i)All the unis rated below BBB went into clearing.
ii)The only BBB uni not in clearing was Edinburgh.
iii)The only ABB unis not in clearing were Manchester,Cardiff, Loughborough and Sussex.
iv)The only AAB unis in clearing were York and Southampton
v)None of the AAA unis were in clearing

Just out of curiosity, is York in Clearing because of its stringent requirement on grades?

Just out of curiosity, is York in Clearing because of its stringent requirement on grades?

Firstly I am not saying it is clearing this year (2008) I am saying it was in clearing last year (2007).

Secondly the choice of typical offer is done by the university. So even if we accept that if York had a lower offer it would clear without clearing that would still leave the question of why York marketed itself as an AAB uni.

Thirdly clearly York with an average of 448 gets a lot of good acceptances. But maybe having a reputation for good at Economic History is not that helpful in these days when lots of applicants want IB jobs. Maybe York are being strategic and are happy to pick up students who had AAA firms and AAB insurances but only got ABB grades.

Sorry, that was my typo:o:

I was also wondering about that:yep:

Economics (with nearly all the other subjects!) is in the provisional Queen Mary Clearing list:

I am just wondering how you knew Queen Mary got into Clearing when not all student results are out.

Edit: Think I might have worded it poorly above. Should have asked how you noticed QM was in clearing? Or is Clearing already available in UCAS? Sorry for the intense editing, I think my brain has gone to sleep.

There was a post in the applications forum of TSR which said (and gave the link) that the Queen Mary provisional list was up.

looks like surrey is likely to be in clearing for economics at least for international students if not for both
Manchester is not in for clearing from what it says here; http://www.manchester.ac.uk/clearing/atoz/

EDIT: And nor does York; http://www.york.ac.uk/admin/uao/clearing/

It only says "Subjects likely to have places" not only these subjects will have places.

The website says 'The University of York expects to have clearing places for quota (UK/EU) students for entry this year on the programmes listed below and for Overseas students on these and other courses.' - So basically, they expect to be in clearing for the listed subject for UK/EU students, but those and additional subjects (meaning maybe Economics) for International students.

We really should wait until the official UCAS list is released before we start jumping to conclusions.
Reply 17
My understanding of these provisional lists is that universities list the courses they are pretty sure they have spaces on. The other courses they do not know yet.
So it is not so much "Yes or No" but "Yes or Don't know".
e.g. nothing on the York link rerfers specifically to economics or claims that list is complete.
Yes. Let's play this annoying waiting game...

Basically it gives an assessment of what % of the student intake has total tariff less than the typical offer points

got the normal codes plus a pair of number in brackets e.g. (1,3) for Warwick. This mean between 1 and 2% of 2007 Warwick economics students had tariffs that failed to meet the typical offer points.
