    lol cocoa butter
Could be since coconut oil doesn't really smell of anything, or maybe I'm just really used to it. But mmm chocolate.

Sorry I don't know much about Afro hair, but wouldn't washing it on the 2/3rd day help to combat the dandruff?

Or would that just dry it out more?! Sorry I'm clueless haha
Lol if we washed our hair every 2/3 days, our hair would literally fall out!

Dont use head and shoulders it just leaves the hair dry and tangled.

Can't really help with the dandruff problem...maybe seek medical advice? :dontknow: As far as hair goes keracare is really good but very expensive lol. I use inecto coconut oil shampoo & conditioner...works wonders! :yep:

I use a moisturizing shampoo, moisturizing conditioner, and coconut oil.

What oil is it that you use? I don't have a problem with dandruff, but I find that coconut oil makes my scalp a lot less itchy, and I hear it's supposed to be really good for keeping dandruff away. If you're still getting it after trying the coconut oil, then perhaps it could be another problem?

    (Original post by FootballJunkie)
i got the same problem , im brasilian and i got the " afro " hair - when i let it grow it gets real bad , but at the mo im just keeping it short it sorts it out for a while
Do you trim your hair often? The ends need to be trimmed around every 6 weeks, otherwise split ends hinder it's growth, and it becomes easier to tangle. Then there's the moisturizing, conditioning, etc.

Sometimes I just feel like grabbing those scissors, hahaha.

Never ever use vaseline on your scalp. It is a petroleum jelly and is a sealant and causes build up

OP it sounds more like build up in your hair which could either be caused by the current process you go through with your hair or a skin condition

Try the Single Bible range. It has an itchy scalp moisturiser (containing neem etc) which I feel has helped my excessively dry scalp tremendously

If that doesnt worry then go natural. Call the natural shops (likely to sell essential oils and other products). Try Mother Earth on St Pauls Road in London, there is a lovely black lady who works there who could give you quick advice over the phone

Do you guys use coconut products or something? Most of my black friends always smell of a distinct strong coco-nutty smell....
lol yes! Coconut Butter, don't use it myself for that very reason - i don't wanna smell coco-nutty so use very lightly scented lotions most of the time.

To answer the OP im a guy, short hair i just moisturise my hair/scalp with Pink Moisturizer each morning or some sort of oil.

    lordy where to begin

dark and lovely can be good but its not the best at recovering damaged hair

its ultra cholesterol is good tho.

    keracare will be a saviour

    PINK oil moisturiser use daily,

to get rid of the dandruff i suggest go get ure hair steam treated you havent got to do this frequetnly but it just helps bring out the natural oils that your hair has and is a good first step in recovering damaged hair.

Right I'm just gonna say, the moment I stopped using stuff in my hair, i didn't have the dandruff/dry scalp problem.
I suggest this to everyone, and although you think it's not possible, it is.
anyways, what i've found works: Lush's soak and float shampoo bar gets rid of dandruff/dry scalps. Their new shampoo bar helps with hair growth seriously.
I don't use oils in my hair but when I do,it's either coconut oil or castor oil for moisture (boots sell them in the baby section) or organic roots stimulator's carrot oil
hair conditioning, i use: lush's jungle conditioner, organic roots stimulator's olive oil (with orange oil) conditioner and their hair mayo.
for relaxing/straightening: organic roots stimulator's kit and ghds.
for colouring: henna, crazy colour hair dyes

those are the things i've been using for the last 2 years and my hair is in great condition and it's not very expensive to maintain my hair either. that and going natural can help hair, but i find i have no patience for the latter. what i would suggest is drop any products that have lots of oil in them - pink oil, any product derived from petroleum really because all it does is clog your pores and allows product build up which causes what you've got.

i go on this site (nappturality.com) sometimes and i pick up hints from there. although it's aimed for those with natural hair it is for anyone really. I would really suggest you give it a good read sometime, especially the product threads that tells you what's good and bad. i know they have a few uk forumites there as well so you can always ask for advice.

there's no hard and fast rule with afro hair, i wash mine every morning and it's in perfect condition. it only starts falling out if i don't wash it for a while!

Ok, my mum oiled my scalp really well with some green oil and I made it soak for a good few hours. She also scratched the scalp to bring up the dead skin.

Instead of shampooing 2times or sometimes 3times, I only shampooed once last night and then applied my hair mayonaise which I left for 20mins.

After blowing drying, I parted my head and had a check for any left behind dandruff and my hair feels sooo much better today.

Lets hope my hair will stay dandruff free for a good week

Thanks for the advice given so far :tsr:

you need to check out these websites!!! they are a savior, my hair is so much better since i started reading the tips -

    http://forum.blackhairmedia.com/
    http://growafrohairlong.com/ <-- this actually words

it sounds like your hair and scalp is dry, so make sure you use a MOISTURIZING shampoo and conditioner (i love creme of nature and sometimes keracare hydrating shampoo), and a WATER BASED hair creme (like organic root stimulator olive oil). try not to apply too much product directly to your scalp, this can cause build up.

my hairdresser gave me syntonics "herbal conditioning hairdress" for dry hair and scalp... about £13 for a pot, but it'll last for ages because you only use the tiniest amounts! you just rub a tiny bit into your scalp and hair and it's great (it's got tea trea oil, shea butter and carrot oil which is apparently the perfect mix!)

I saw something else to this on another website and im quite amazed, but quite dubious as to whether it actually works!

Have you used such products that make your length grow, like loads? . . . .

    Hey,
Try not to use products with mineral oil, as they can cause dandruff. Opt for more natural oils, ie. Coconut, Castor, Carrot etc.
