I'm going to start ranting lol. My hair has been on a mad journey. So my mother started relaxing my hair when I was four, it was and still is extremely thick and my hair was 14 inches then. My hair is always braided but has cut. I’m quite worried; I don’t think I want my mum to touch my hair again. Usually relaxed is left in for an hour, I thought that was normal until I told my friend and she nearly had a heart attack. I’m glad I still have hair on my head. My hair is currently 15/16 inches I’m trying to maximise it by taking better care with it . I’ve started using JBCO and is actually amazing definitely recommended it, sleeping with a silk wrap, wrapping my hair, combing it properly, co-washing, pre conditioning . My mum relaxed my hair a month ago and there is small bit where the root is relaxed. I’m waiting for new growth then going to the hairdressers to get it relaxed there. I don’t want my hair to cut again. I transitioned for a year and that failed. I didn’t know what I was doing but my hair grew by 2 inches. I want to get to a point where I can stop relaxing but want to avoid the big chop. I can't be relaxing forever

wow i wish my hair was as long as yours, make sure you go to the hairdressers next time to relax because the relaxer shouldn't be left in for more than 25 minutes and that's if your hair is really coarse.

Where do you get JBCO from? The internet or are they available in south London shops? Don't leave the relaxer on for too long take it out when it starts to sting, maybe 10/15 minutes. 2 inches of growth after a year seems quite small I got about 5 inches after a year of transitioning, maybe the products you use are not quite right for you. You should look at some women on youtube the advise on there is pretty good.

You should be able to get JBCO from any hair shop. I got mine from a hair shop in woolwich in south east london.

Transitioning isn't easy (at least not in my experience) but your hair should probably be growing more than that (unless you have a really slow growth rate- some people do, but it's hard to say). I don't want to big chop either- I'm just starting on my 8th month post relaxer, and people are starting to ask me when I'm going to *finally* cut my hair. It's only about 12 inches long- almost half is new growth (so it looks absolutely bizarre most of the time). It used to be past my bra strap though, so I also understand about hair cutting- mine broke off once I started doing it myself. I'm really surprised to how long you kept the relaxer on for!!! When I was doing mine it was just 15 minutes at the MOST- although I know it depends on the texture and type of hair you have. Your hairdresser will definitely be able to help you so that your hair doesn't get as damaged this time around. Good luck on your hair journey!

THIS ^ so badly. Hair shops lie! It's not satin.

Hi, I am probably too late, but you can always try and get some satin scarfs from an islamic shops that sell satin/silk scarfs (normally used for hijab's). This is a website i get some of my scarfs from, they are great (: http://www.hijabstoreonline.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=10&products_id=7416

does anyone encounter problems with silk/satin scarves? im quite restless when i sleep and i ALWAYS wake up with mine under my bed or under my pillow!it never stays on my head! i wonder if there's another alternative? (im currently looking into satin/silk pillows) but i still want my hair covered when i sleep!

I find my hair scarf would fall off as i move a lot, by accident my mum brought me a wig cap thinking it was a du-rag, i now wrap my hair, stick the wig cap on and then put my silk hair scarf over (tying twice) and it hasn't came off since! I have also seen that the wig cap has helped with my hair growth and no longer having split ends.

Hi,

I'm new to this thread but I just wanted to have a quick rant, if that's ok. I am transitioning from relaxed to natural and I'm around 5 month's post relaxer and I just got my hair braided. I have very coarse hair, its probably mostly a 4c texture so the hair dresser was finding it fairly difficult to section my hair for each braid. what annoyed me the most was that she was raking through my hair with a fine toothed comb and greasing my scalp with the petrolatum filled blue magic  .

If not for the things I have learnt about hair since starting my hair journey these things wouldn't have bothered me as much but I find it shocking how little hairdressers actually know about hair! Next time i get my hair done I'm going to insist that a wide tooth comb is used and I will bring my own products.

I feel like such a snob, but it has to be done.

i had a very similar experience about 3 weeks ago when i went in to relax my hair! i was about 16 weeks post and my hair is quite coarse as well but the way the hairdresser handled it was unbelievable! she was more or less fighting with my hair, and then she was about to slap on some DAX and i was like "aww hell no!!" but she said she didnt have any other products!. overall my last salon experience has put me off hairdressers 100%.

the really annoying bit was that most of my hair didnt even relax!! i only discovered this the week after when i washed it!!

its sad that a LOT of afro hairdressers have no clue about hair and good hair products, and when you try to explain to them that they're not handling your hair properly they get all rude like im not paying HER to do my hair!! its so annoying and frustrating! and i honestly wouldnt wish my last salon experience on my worst enemy.

Laaadiiiies (and gents with long hair) I have a question,
Okay so I chopped all my hair off about 4 years ago and it's currently just past my shoulders curly. The ends are disgustingly damaged because I killed my hair with heat straightening when I was first growing it back, then I experimented with texturizing in places and then I have bleached over it all a good 4 or 5 times. I am about a 3c in texture but 4a in places.

Is there any leave in conditioner you can recommend that will add moisture to the ends but won't leave them totally greasy? Because I have tried everything and I am totally at a loss :frown:

I dont know if anyone has mentioned this in an older post but Ill tell you anyway, personally whenever I use vinegar (put a couple of the covering if the bottle) after showering and leave it for a couple of minutes on the sculp then wash it off with water again, you'll notice visible results in a couple of days its very effective!
My hair is 'relaxed' (accidentally underprocessed) and I need a really good cone free moisturiser because tresemme naturals just leaves my hair crispy :frown: On the plus I would recommend grapeseed oil for sealing, I am in love with it because it's so light but non greasy and didn't leave my hair crispy like olive or coconut oil!

What is cone free? Elasta products are really good. Don't seal your with oil if you don't moisturise it first or it'll just 'sit there'. Coconut oil is good for conditioning. Olive oil is good generally aswell

Cone free refers to silicone free products (ingredients ending in -cone and -xane), which I'm trying to avoid because they build up on hair and need sulfates (extremely drying) to remove from the hair (part of the curly girl routine-lots of info out there)!

I don't like coconut oil or olive oil because they make my hair crispy (when sealing after moisturising), but grapeseed oil is amazing!

I bought apple cider vinegar yesterday and diluted it with water do you reckon it is ok to not wash it out and mask the smell with some sweet smelling oils.

Try Schwartzkopf Supersoft Bio Pomegranate Conditioner. I haven't tried it yet because I want to finish my tresemme naturals, I got it from poundland for.......£1 lol. It is mineral oil and silicone free.

Ooh I'll try that, sounds good! Just to answer another question, my hair doesn't really smell of ACV once it dries when I do a rinse with it.

Any 'Black' hair shop. Try jbco shampoo , I've heard it doesn't have nay sulphates.

Will definetly recommend using olive oil with conditioning/shampooing , for the first time in my life I could put my fingers through my natural hair without stopping. My hair is really soft as a result.

I get a a lot of guidance from this site hairliciousinc.com

I just wanted to add that Holland and barett is a really good place to get natural products that are good for our hair, e.g. all of their shampoos are sulphate free.
