Default At what time does a lengthy work experience become an internship?

Basically, I've just finsihed my first year at university and I've been at a stockbrokers in London this summer since June and finish at the end of this month. I've been doing lots of hands work and have learnt alot. It was put forward originally as work experience, but it's not your typical photocopying and making tea two week kind of thing.

When it go to write it on my C.V. could I put this down as an internship instead of work experience? What do you think?

Thanks

Do you get the opportunity to be considered for a graduate job at the end of it?

If no, not internship.

Yes it has been mentioned a few times, it's just that I didn't apply for an internship per se before I started. It's evolved into one more so. Would you class this as an internship in this case?

You're going to get a grad job while a first year at uni? And leave uni to take it up? That is on the cards is it?

If it is, it is an internship.

Otherwise, it is not.

Internship has a precise meaning for finance careers.

It's an internship if the employer calls it an internship programme. If not, it's a job. The exact terminology doesn't really matter when it's on your CV.

Yep, nobody's likely to care about if technically it means there's a grad job for the year after or not (someone I know got in trouble for putting 1-2 day taster days down as internships..idiot). If its of sufficient length (minimum 4, ideally 6 weeks), and you're doing some real work rather than photocopying, I'd say its fine to use the word internship - '1st year internship' is a commonly used phrase, people do internships even though they have more than 1yr of uni left, logically most things can have a FT job offer lined up if you do well, so its fine. Don't dwell on such minor details though.

Personally I've always considered "work experience" to main unpaid and "internship" to mean paid

In fact, thinking about it, that tends to also cover Bateman's definition quite neatly, as companies would typically only pay someone inexperienced for doing real work for a half-decent length of time. Sort of covers Ben's as well, since the main reason most companies take interns is to assist with their graduate recruitment programmes...

I'm a **** for accuracy with these kind of things.

I blame it on a previous job...
