They completely changed the way the network worked last year, so yes, I'm pretty sure you can now (as long as it's not a P2P game). Someone who's a first year will be able to confirm though.
thx laser, as said if i a first year can comfirm please that would be excellent
Last year, you could just fine

If all else fails, there's also Fragsoc, who run LANs every few weekends which is pretty damn good  </shameless plug>

Fragsoc can be really elitist and grumpy though.

When I went, if you couldn't instagib at least 15 players a minute on UT 2004 and/or weren't a level 70 in T6 raid gear, you were a waste of oxygen.

Everyone was really unfriendly =( I didn't know where the cables were to connect my computer to the network and someone almost bit my head off when I asked. Probably didn't help that I didn't know 'the lingo'. I ended up sitting in a corner, leveling my hunter and wishing I was doing something else.
I can't really speak for last year, but now we try not to be like that. Of course, there will always be some that are like that unfortunately though, although we just really play for fun now, try it again if you want

Also, we don't play WoW, so we don't care about your level 70

Is Rapidshare blocked? and is it safe (and OK) to use it?
Reply 49
I doubt Rapidshare is blocked, but as you'll be on the same IP address as about 50 others, unless you have a premium account you're unlikely to be able to use it much.
You have a unique external IP on campus now (or at least...you did last year), so you should be able to use it. Of course...if they decide to log your traffic, which they can do if they see you shifting a lot, you may get caught if it's illegal

Is it possible to use Xbox live there?

What about rapidshare, is it blocked ?

I am also wondering the same question

Is Rapidshare Blocked???
Rapidshare works, as it's just normal HTTP (there's no explicitly blocked sites AFAIK), but if they decide to log your traffic, you may get caught.

Xbox Live also works, but you have to put a second network card in your machine and bridge the 2 connections as the Xbox doesn't understand the encryption used on campus (MSCHAPV2).

No idea what that means ;-) - still, as long as it works (somehow) all is good

Thanks!

I'm in Alcuin (was living in Alcuin colleges last year) and rapidshare was working fine. I never used it though, only newsgroups for me. No sites were filtered that I became aware of and no traffic was filtered. In Alcuin we got 8Mb down (1MB/s) and 8Mb up too.

I can confirm that PS3 could play online and 360s too, and Slugs is correct in that you have to have 2 network adapters in your PC/laptop - one for the 360 and one for the ethernet cable to the internet.

Also I strongly recommend if you are into PC gaming to give FragSoc a shot, I joined last year and it's really good fun.

I played xbox live in 2007 by using internet connection sharing on my windows PC and two network cards.

How are Steam games port-wise?

TFC and StarCraft are all I can see myself missing.

All outgoing ports are fine, it's just incoming that is blocked, so just like your internet at home
