Same reason for the rest of spelling in english - cos that's the way it
is in the dictionary :smile:

Although OED lists "frend" as an obsolete form
of friend... most of the old germanic languages have the I in, like
friund, vriend, friunt... tho not all.

I've made lots of friends on my course. Incidentally, not one of my 6
best friends applied to Oxbridge. And I now feel crap that I did.

We have snazzy little VPNs here, so sitting here in my room, or when I
go home, I can do every as if I was sitting in the Department of
Computing.

It's cool, and F***ing fast.

Er... I SSH into the Maths dept's computers, using PuTTY. Once I'm
there, I can run Lynx, a pisspoor text-only browser than can handle the
odd table but falls short of coping with frames. (If I could really be
bothered, I suppose I could install Vista Exceed and set it up so I can
run Netscape in a graphical window, but that's too much hassle for even
me to look up a word.)

Hmm... best I can do is VNC. Bit slow, but gets the job done. And works
from any computer with a web browser... though it was ridiculously slow
trying to use it from trinity earlier... cos of course their network is
atrocious. It's faster from teh chemistry deparment...

The way I read it is that he posted a message wondering about friends to
indicate his lack of comprehension due to not having. Personally I'd
read the subject line as meaning the TV programme...

11.13pm isn't late... that's just getting started. Getting more towards

Nope. It still eludes me. (If anything, the fact that he's curious about
the word 'friends' would indicate that it's a word he often has occasion

Not so sure about VPN... stands for virtual private network or sthing
like. VNC is basically a way to use your computer from someone elses -
it sends the data from teh keyboard and mouse you're using to your
computer, and sends the graphics data back. All you need is a small
program installed on your computer, a working reasonably recent browser
on the other computer, and a reasonably fast connection in between. You
could probably get away with it on ADSL, but I doubt any slower would
be usable...
