Re: The Official Higher English Personal Study ThreadYeah I agree, the symbolism and imagery are quite strong and fit nicely in the storys setting once the female characters start to experiece hardship and have to endure the violent husband. ( a common problem today in asian countries) . The oppressive taliban regime also makes a strong impact to these ideas of the story.(Original post by Kirsteneg)
I'd actually say this book is the best novel I have read. The imagery and symbolism is really emotive and powerful. For AH I was going to do a topic on something to do with how the literary techniques are used to convey the central female protagonists experience with oppression in modern Afgan culture and their emancipation from patriarchy.
In my PS i would like to concentrate on one specific aspect and that is how the husband use's his wife just for a "son" and then discards her when she cannot conceive a child. And later on brutally attacks her for any minor mistakes which is totally absurd. Any suggestions on what kind of literary techniques I should use in my essay? Thanks.
Also if i may ask what did you decide to do for your AH English Dissertion. -

I haven't actually pinned down my dissertation books yet but I'm either going to do The Color Purple and Their Eyes Were Watching God or Othello and King Lear or A Doll's House and Pygmalion. I only have like 2/3 to choose books ad topic.
I was originally going to do The Color Purple with A Thousand Splendid Suns o the topic I mentioned before ad 1 teacher said it would be fine but the other said the books weren't similar enough.

Last year, I knew the general topic I wanted to do for my book and my english teacher wrote the essay question for me, but I don't think they're meant to do that.

How issues of racism and prejudice are conveyed and explored through the narrative technique, characterization (primarily the conflict between the two main characters), language, setting, structure (a couple from these to make the question more focused). Check with your teacher if something like this is acceptable. Are you set on this book? -

So here i am, writing out my personal statement of intent...
Dorian gray and narcissism anyone? My teacher was like "you should incorporate narcissism and aestheticism in your essay"
and i just sat there going, "what now?"
Quote Arcadiahouse. She did Dorian Gray last year and now she's doing advanced higher. -

I would urge you to go and see the new film adaptation of 'Dorian Gray' with Colin Firth in it; it just came out on Wednesday, and is absolutely amazing. It's not exactly like the book, but all the important parts are there and Colin Firth is fantastic as Henry. I can't recommend it enough
I will PM you, I'm only too happy to discuss the book with you
LuhLah, I just love you.(Original post by LuhLah)
James: Arcadia is your englishy goddess. She will help.
