Default IBO has the students' interests in mind?

Guess again.

Once more, they've proven that they will go to any extent to rip the students off, even if it means lowering our final marks.

Want proof? Check out page 17 of this presentation of the recent administrative developments.

For those who are too lazy to click the link, here's what it says:

Article 19: Enquiry upon results
  • The current article 19.2 states: Re-marking a candidate’s externally assessed material may lead to a higher grade for a subject, but not to a lower grade.
  • Coordinators may request a re-mark of externally assessed material (category 1), the return of externally assessed material (category 2) and/or a report on the moderation of internal assessment (category 3). This service is known as an enquiry upon results. In previous examination sessions a candidate’s grade would only remain the same or be raised as a result of a category 1 re-mark. With effect from the May 2009 session a candidate’s grade may also be lowered as a consequence of a re-mark.
  • The new wording for Article 19.2 states: Re-marking a candidate’s externally assessed material may lead to a higher or lower grade for a subject.

The old arrangement was wonderful. Pay to ensure, when in doubt about it, that you got the most reliable marking results the first time around by getting marked by a senior examiner who knows what (s)he's doing. If you didn't get it the first time, your grade improves. If you did, then your mark stays the way it is, no harm done, and IB gets a little bit of money in the process. So everyone's happy.

Now everything will be completely unfair for us candidates. We have no idea who marked our exams the first time, so if we want to get a remark, instead of it being an extra assurance of original marker reliability, it now becomes a huge gamble in which not even our original marks are guaranteed. Now even more power is in the hands of the senior examiner who remarks, and his or her judgement of our paper can even bring our mark down, in spite of the fact that the contents of the paper have not changed in any way. So much for objectivity.

I get that they want to also be able to address marking that was originally too generous as well as that which may have been too harsh. But (since nothing was mentioned in the powerpoint to suggest otherwise) the money is still coming from OUR pockets, and WE shouldn't have to pay for THEIR quality control issues that they've discovered in hindsight. If they want to adopt this new policy "up OR down", then remarks shouldn't have a fee attached to them, since we're not actually paying for anything intrinsically valuable anymore. But of course, IB will look at every opportunity to take money from our pockets, even to the extent that they'll make us pay for them to—rather than give us something—instead potentially take something from us away.

Maybe I'm exaggerating a little bit. I wasn't even anticipating requesting a remark after getting my exam results next year, since I'm going into uni right away and by then they're way past caring about my final marks. Now I know not to even contemplate it.

I don't know about you guys, but I expected better from the people that are supposed to be determining my future in this world.

That's pretty interesting, and definitely unfair!

However, in the UK the A Level students already have this problem - any remarks of an A Level module could put their mark up or down. They have to pay for the remark like us (unless the school's being nice - I don't know any IB student from school who paid for a remark this year, because if the school feels they deserve one the school pays ).

It sucks, and it's one of the reasons IB was slightly more attractive than A Levels, but nothing we can really do I guess. I say this having finished the IB though, so good luck to you guys!

Yeah think that happens at unis too

I remember being ill but doing an exam then failing it by 1 point but the annnoying thing was I lost 5 points due to the way I put things on paper when for one I was a disabled student with dyslexia so should of been taken into account

What it was, is that I put down a - instead of a , 5 times so each time lost a point

I could handle that but not failing due to that!

Very insightful post!
I'm so happy that it is not applicable for May 2008 candidates

I know that this happens in A-levels but come on, getting a B module remarked to a C instead of an A is blatantly not going to bring your overall A-level grade down unless you're at the border.

In the IB, getting a 6 and remarking it to a 5 instead of a 7 is a HUGE difference, people can easily get rejected by universities for it and it will only be demoralising.

This is pretty unfair.

Isn't it applicable? I have more than once heard of people losing a grade with a remark this year..

That's not supposed to happen. Component grades can go down, but the overall grade only will stay or increase, at least until May 2009.

Oh. This is really bad.

Say you have the feeling that you were marked unfairly. Instead of being able to check without any fear, you now have the risk of getting a lowered grade. So, for example, if you missed out on getting into your Firm Choice on UCAS, suddenly, neither can you get into your Insurance!

How about we all complain to our IB Co-ordinators? Maybe they'll change it back? (It's worth a shot.)

but it isn't the IBO who decides when EE 1st draft etc should be handed in - that's the school. EE's aren't sent in until March I think so it's really up to the school when to place the deadlines...

the new remark thing is ridiculous! remarking is supposed to exist for the students, not anyone else. What's in it for the IBO if the score can be downgraded? people are likely to send in less remarks then, right? do you have to pay if your score is lowered? that would be the top of the icing of it all. "Hey, your 6 is now a 5, $80 please". IBO def has some dodgy stuff going on...

I mean, that doesn't make sense at ALL, re-mark is there to ensure students' works are marked correctly, not to mention the IBO is educational institution, and this is the only way to get things done properly after taking the exam.
I guess they no longer require students to pay a fee for remarks.
If they intend to charge us for a remark, we really need to boycott them somehow

Are you allowed to remark multiple times? Because that would totally explain it...

Hey though, I err... passed over your username even though I read this thread.

Well, I don't know about remarking multiple times, but I guess now you can appeal and have reviewed the remark decisions? It'll cost hundreds of dollars, though. (See page 7 of the powerpoint for more details.)
