Conferences that are held in the South East should be banned  Eastbourne is so far away...

Not for me it isn't :p:

The Boosh
that's how i roll!!!!!

i can't stop watching the ending of tenacious d - the rock off. quality, absolutely quality. the pick of destiny. oh my.       RAWK!

sorry Boosh, have to disagree pick of destiny was a let down. The first album was immensely funny and in classis rock terms very good. However, Pick was just awful ly put together as a money spinner. shame
well I am off to a conference in Italy on Sunday, that should be fun. Presenting a paper of three years of work, it is really demoralising summising over a tenth of my life in half an hour.

Then I have another (UK based this time) in London at IC the week after, I haven't registered but I am going to sneak in. I have spent my conference budget for the year going to Italy and have got 2 travel grants that I applied for. I know I wont have the fancy lanyard, but I can not see how they are going to ban me from getting in to my own department when I have swipe card access.

"what's that undergrad stewarding, I can't get to the finance office, go away....oh look the way to the office passes a lecture theatre where a leading professer is currently talking, just pop my head in."

What is the point of having conferences in your own dept. The whole point is to get away, see somewhere new and catch up with friends. not blinking well do the same routine. I hate IC even more now.

Hullo flexiblefish, I presume you have a massive hatred of IC? I'm sure I'll be in the same position in a year :p: I'm starting my MSc there in a month.

Yeah if the BNP get in then I would be sent back home. Where that may be, I dunno. The midlands I guess.

good luck with the MSc (what you doing btw).

IC well it is really cut throat as it strives to be the best by ignoring the needs of its members. My supervisor is great, he helps. But the admin and the way it treats folk is diplorable. Also they are up their own backsides.

I am in natural sciences so they hate us as we are not medicine or engineering or Tanaka so we bring very little to the college, therefore we get ousted. Maybe I have a chip, I dunno. tbh my prof is well known in the field I want to stay in and his ref will mean more than IC ever will for my career. Plus I spose if I ever wanted to sell my soul, a PhD and DIC from Imperial will impress those money grabbing whores.

Put it this way I have opted for a UoL degree as I feel no affinity to the college.

That seems to be true across the board - with whom one does ones PhD being more important than where one does it. Once one has a few decent publications, a PhD is a tick in the box - the weight of a couple of solid journal articles and conference papers is trusted more than having been awarded a PhD. So the key is how to get to that point of having those publications - as you say, there's the reference to help get jobs, but the main thing is contacts, and that's where a good supervisor comes into their own - visiting researchers whom one gets to meet, being introduced to people at conferences, etc. One is riding their coat-tails, but if one is willing to make ones opportunities as these situations arise, it opens doors in terms of collaboration, getting on programme comittees, being head-hunted, and so on.

Plus I spose if I ever wanted to sell my soul, a PhD and DIC from Imperial will impress those money grabbing whores.

(Just to add, I know nothing about selling out....)

I am watching http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KgRE5LRx5w it is better than I remember.
how strange!!!
what did you think about the film?
i did not like it that much, it was a poor vehicle for some mediocre tunes.

as I say the D first album was magic with great tunes such as

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcJwz7wu8_s&feature=related
