natural science PS problem...

i think i will be applying for Natural Science Phy at Cambridge but will probably apply straight physics elsewhere.

as i understand it, nat science is alot more than just physics, so do i need to tailor my PS to accomodate that, which could perhaps annoy the other unis wondering why i included other sciences...

vice versa, if i only mention physics (like a PS for oxford physics course for example), would Cam questions my motives for applying for nat science, and the level of dedication for it?

im in such a dilemma, the question applies to those who are doing biology as well. thanks for your help!! :banghead:

wow, there're 522 smilies!

No it shouldn't matter. I know people who applied for Physics or Biology pure elsewhere and wrote statements for those courses who got offers at Cambridge. They will test your commitment to all parts of the course at the interview.

oh, so if you only put physy stuff on tht ps, they would still ask for chemistry stuff?? jeeze...

would i leave out bio?? i mean, surely?

I only mentioned physics and maths(since I was applying for theoretical physics/maths and physics elsewhere) in my PS. There'll probably be a space on the SAQ for you to write about why natural sciences, so you can put stuff about it there if you want to. I got asked why I wanted to do natural sciences in my interviews, but wasn't asked anything about other sciences but physics.

wow... thanks!
i want to apply for christ too ...
how good is your As (ums)?? im worried about mine...
They told me they understood you'd probably be applying for more specific courses elsewhere... Also applying for Phys Nat Sci

When you apply for NatSci you specify either Physical or Biological. You say Physical, you shouldn't get even a speck of biology in the interview. Especially if you dont have Biology A-Level.

Ah, Jiajun, I noticed that you're doing the same AS Subjects as me! So cheers for asking these questions, I'm thinking about Physical Natural Sciences, too...

So you'd do a statement for physics and chemistry, and they'd examine suitability for Natural Sciences at interview? I think I get it... thank you!!

Only mentioned chemistry on mine. You'll get an interview pretty much regardless of what you put.

coool, im still not that sure whether to apply straight phy at Oxford to be honest.

but from what i have gathered, if ur thinking about apply for phy elsewhere, just put all physicy stuff in the PS, and put other interests in sciences in the SAQ...

hope u did well in ur AS

what about chem?? im not at all confident at it...

Just make it clear on your PS that its physics you're aiming for, that should minimize any chem questions, or elliminate them entirely.

Yeah, that's my worry - I don't know whether to do something broad like Physical Natural Sciences or just go for something more specialised. But I love physics, chemistry and maths, so I wouldn't know what to do!! That's why I'm thinking of Natural Sciences - it's got a bit of them all, and gives you more opportunity to study other bits of sciences and specialise later on.

Anyway, I'm only just starting my sixth form studies, so I've got a bit of time yet! So good luck with your applications and stuff - and thanks again!!

I only mentioned physics in mine and at both colleges I was interviewed at I had two interviews, one physics and one chemistry. So if you are studying chemistry I would reckon on having an interview about it, regardless of whether you actually plan to study it (I don't.)

It's an annoying system because in the first year I want to take one biology option, one physics option then either chemistry or another biology option, but because I was applying for physics elsewhere I only got interviewed for physical. In fact I am more leaning towards biology now, and it is definitely my strongest subject, but the interview system doesn't take into account people who love both biology and physics.

thanks...well... natural science sounds like the perfect course for you...imagine if you have to study physics for 4 years despite liking biology more... im not that confident in my chemistry at all... having scrapped an A... how can i prepare the chem interview let along physics?... i hope they dont ask any question outside my knowledge range, are they going to drawn questions from AS chemistry, or anything upto the December period, ie A2 stuff??...
Thanks...

My biggest tip would be to revise maths like crazy, especially curve sketching and logs. All four of my interviews where seriously maths orientated. I hadn't realised this for my first two, but my second two were the day after my maths exam (C3) in January, and as a result I found them much easier as I was in practice with all areas of maths, not just the area we were currently studying. For chemistry and physics, if you learn all your formulae and mechanisms you will be fine, if you don't know all the tiny details just say and they always seemed happy to help you out.
