Ah the shanghai league table is actually the closest thing we have to a objective league table. Things look about right on there. As a UCL student, I wouldn't say UCL is 9th place, our research is excellent, but some are alot American uni's. It does depend on what you emphasise though, I prefer to emphaise post grad research and job prospects.
I agree with freols, although i wouldn't put it so crudely. League tabless are alsways contradicting one another and it's really hard to judge which one is the most reliable. Also it depends on what aspects of universities they are looking at and placing importance on. This table was the most commonly used if you searched for the world's highest ranking Universities:
http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/hybrid.asp?typeCode=243&pubCode=1
This one places Imperial as 6th and UCL as 7th. These two are so close together i don't really think it makes any difference at all.

This is the one quoted in the article. This one places UCL 22nd and Imperial 27th
http://www.arwu.org/rank2008/ARWU2008_A(EN).htm

These tables have huge differences between them. Leagues tables really don't mean anything. Neither Imperial nor UCL are better because it's all a matter of personal opinion on what you want from your university becuase these two universities are really quite different. Obviously it also makes a difference depending on the course you want to take - Imperial doesn't even do half the courses that UCL offers as it's mainly science specialist.

To conclude one league table shows UCL as higher while the other shows Imperial as better which means they are both just as good
