Default HELP: trains/tubes in London are scary!

Hi everyone,
I need to travel to Kent at the end of the September, but to do so I need to travel through London, which I've never done before.

The main station I've got to go to is Euston, but then I need to use the tube to travel to either Charing Cross or London Bridge and get a train from there.

I know Euston train station and Euston tube station are not in the same building, and I'm already scared as to how to get from one to the other since I have no sense of direction!

But also, what about Charing Cross or London Bridge. Are they both like Euston in that their train and tube stations are separate? Which is the easiest and nicest to get around?

Sorry to be pathetic, but I'd be greatful for reassurance... thanks!

Euston train station and the tube are the same one, well they're in the same building and there's a massive sign telling you where to go to get the tube. Do you mean Euston square? It's so well signposted don't worry! If you're really unsure, ask one of the train people, they're really helpful!

I'm not sure about Charing Cross or London Bridge though, I don't normally go to those stations

The train/tube stations are separate but not v far apart, and there's loads of signs to show you where to go. If you can see, you'll be fine

Ahh, sorry I meant Euston Square, but I've just double checked and it's Euston that I want! Thank goodness it's the same building, thanks!

Any more light on London Bridge and Charing Cross would be great......

Charing Cross definitely. It's an underground path thing from the main station to the tube, or across the road if you prefer..

I'm faaaairly sure it's the same at London Bridge, but not 100%. But it certainly won't be far away/hard to find

I was worried the first time i travelled to london for the weekend, I was about 15/16 and really as people said, don't worry there are so many signs you can't get stuck and if one confuses you there are enough smily people. Last time i was there someone i'd never met asked me for help and I don't even live in London and we figured it out together!

Just make sure you get the train going in the right direction, look at the big board next to the platforms and check the list of stops has yours on it.

Looks like from Euston you have to get the Northern Line (Black) southbound

via Charing Cross for chargin X (obv lol)
or via Bank for london bridge

good luck and have fun ;p

Although if you get a train in the wrong direction, you'll only lose about 5 minutes, and it's about 10 yards from one train to another

You need not worry, when you get off the train at Euston, go to the tube enterance (which is down some stairs/escalator & it has a massive sign above it) and then follow the maps down there. Its easy when you get the hang of it. On the platform or just before you go in/on to it just make sure the station you want is on it and make sure its in the right direction. If its not then you can get off at the next stop and get on the right train.

A really good tip is DONT WORRY, there are loads of staff and/or people that will be willing to help you and you can really get that lost, if your unsure, get of the train and make sure.

You could also get a tube map at Euston just before you go through the ticket barriers but there is not that much to worry about, its will be so easy after you have done it for the first time.

If you're going from tube to train at London Bridge, when you go out the ticket machine gate things (whatever they're called.. the thing you tap your oyster on), turn right and you're facing a brick wall. Turn right again, and walk down past all the shops, and go up the escalators. From there, find your platform

London Bridge is nicer, I reckon.

One thing...Make sure you get on the right branch of the Northern Line. Many a confused tourist makes that mistake...

would personally recommend Charing Cross, smaller and easier to get around, whereas at London Bridge its very confusing because there are so may trains and platforms. quite easy to make a mistake.

My friend wanted to go to greenwich and got on a train to dartford because they changed the platform whilst he went to get his train

as others have said its very easy to find your way around euston though, been there a few times and it's hard to get lost.. Really!!

Euston Rail Station to Euston Tube Station (for Northern and Victoria Lines) is noddy.
Simply down some escalators when you get off the train.
[It's Euston Square Tube Station that's about 300m out of Euston Rail Station, for the Circle, Hammersmith & City, and the Metropolitan lines]

As for which of London Bridge or Charing Cross to go from... well firstly both stations are on the Northern line, so that's good; only one Tube train needs to cross London; they are on different branches though:

So for London Bridge look out for Southbound via City Branch/via Bank.
For Charing Cross look out for Southbound via Charing X Branch/via Leicester Square etc - as the two Southbound Northern line branches go from different platforms.

When you get off the train at either of those tube stations, the National Rail stations are really well signposted, and are normally just linked by escalators and stairs.

Of the two stations, would probably choose to go from Charing Cross Rail as a novice, it's only got 6 platforms which is a whole lot less scary than the 16 of London Bridge Rail.

This is what Charing Cross Rail station looks like, you can see there's shops, eateries and an information desk - and on that diagram you can see the steps leading down to the Underground.

It'll be OK. Don't panic, there's loads of staff around at those Underground stations AND the Rail stations; just ask them.
