Default Arch vs Dual Arch and Eng in 09 at Sheffield

Scottish Highers (equivalent AS) AAAAAA (+Geography this year)
Advanced Highers (A2) (Art, Maths, Physics this year)

Applying for Architecture 2009 entry:
Cambridge
Sheffield
Cardiff
Edinburgh
Bath
I am considering applying for Dual Honours Architecture and Structural Engineering at Sheffield as well as Architecture alone.

My question:
-Has anyone had experience of this or similar courses? Is it a good mixture, or simply not enough of either course?
-Would it be wise to apply to both the Dual Honours course and Architecture at Sheffield?
-Any advice (on application to 2009 entry architecture) for a student interested in both Sciences and Art but with little knowledge of Humanities eg. History/History Of Art?

I would say just apply for architecture; it will involve history, science, geography, art and a small amount of maths. Most of it is design work. With your grades and subjects, the chances of offers for your uni's is high. If it is architecture you want to do, applying to just that course i would think will also show that you are certain it is what you want to do. If you apply to both courses at Sheffield, i am sure it wont hinder the chances of offers, but it is a space sacrificed for another arch. course. I think you need to apply to one or the other, unless you are determined to go to Sheffield, although i am sure you will get a range of uni's to choose from.

Both courses have a different structure, the Dual is 4 years, in the first you do all the engineering ( i think) and 1st year architecture lectures, and then from second year you do architecture studio work. but if you do dual you will eventually have covered the entire architecture degree, you would also have the option of switching to a single course at any time (either the engineering or architecture) and i know 2 or 3 people who have done that. Dual would probably give you better job prospects but it is more work, and the engineering side has a lot more maths. wheter you apply for one or the other (or both) really depends on how interested you are in the engineering side, although it is possible to drop it, the course is a big comittment and it wouldn't really be until the second year before you have that option. If you apply then make sure its the right choice (no point in spending money on an extra year).
Only apply for both if you think you would prefer them to one of your other options, don't use it as a back up offer with the intention to drop the engineering side (not that you'll need that with your grades ) If you would prefer architecture then I wouldn't bother applying for the dual course.
