British Asians and Muslims at Lincoln

Are there many British Asians and Muslims at the University? What has your experience of Lincoln been?

Slighty anxious, as I read a report in the Lincoln Local paper of mosque burning. And yes, I do realise that to read the headlines of a paper is not the best way to judge an area - I'm from Bradford.

I am more worried of the response from the outside community rather than the students.

Any thoughts?

The mosque wasn't burned, a church that was bought to be converted into a mosque was torched, probably due to planning permission only allowing the existing building to be renovated when they wanted something new. Sly way of getting around planning but it's what some people do.

How many Asian/International students are they at the University?

Is anybody here on the forum an Asian/International Student?

I want to be able to enjoy my time at the University and surrounding areas, what's the treatment like from the locals?

It depends on the type of person you are as well, the locals are ok although can be ass holes at time, last night i was out and it was packed of locals, and it was a good night, we got talking to some that was pissed which in my experiance is the best type of local as they don't give a **** who you are, but majority will see you as a student and think what ******s, (thats my experiance) but theres pleanty of students here and student "areas" where the locals just don't govery oftern.

Hi, I'm an OU student so more a resident than a real student. The mosque was near a council estate and I think the locals were more peed off because there was next to no parking so cars would have been parked outside their houses. There are plenty off non-brits here but I see more polish than asians. I do hear of a few racially motivated attacks but unless you plan on wandering around sincil bank on your own at night you'll be fine. I think lincoln is safer than a lot of cities and most of the non-student community are normal
To be honest I dont think asian/muslims make up a significant percentage of the students in lincoln, but Ive never picked up any bad vibes from locals or students to people who arent white.
Im pretty sure there's some sort of society for asians/muslims at the uni anyway if you feel the need to socialise with those particular people.
And I dont know if Im being a little naive here, but why would anyone care if you're asian/muslim? Its hardly like you're a leper lol.
Although, I know it can be a little uncomfortable feeling like you're in the minority. Me and a couple of our friends (one asian, one white) went to visit our friend (who is also asian), in Manchester. She took us to a club one night and oh my god Ive never felt so uncomfortable in my life. Me and my friend were the only white girls in there and we got so many dirty looks off people all night.
Although, that could be because the place seemed to be full of those girls who have the mentality that its okay to have a major attitude problem just because they're black and their ancestors were slaves or something.

Angry black women syndrome lol.

You'd hope that racism wasn't present but I'm afraid some areas of lincoln are a bit backwards. The council estates seem to be made up of only white british people. I used to live on Birchwood and I've heard kids shouting '**** off you ******' to a black lad who biked past. The kids were only about 6 years old.

As a student I don't think you would ever visit the kinds of places I'm talking about but I would always be careful where you go and don't go alone at night. But I guess that is just common sense anyhow.

To sum it up, no there is a very low percentage of muslims in Lincoln.
There aren't many muslims around, but it doesn't mean that people are racist because of it. The only thing I can say about the 'locals' (and I class myself in that group), is that many are very backwards-thinking and provincial; which I tend to find :santa2::santa2::santa2::santa2::santa2::santa2::santa2: irritating. But again, you can't tar everyone with the same brush!
