Re: Personal Statement Help Question Thread
I'm applying for Biology having studied Biology, Maths, History and English Literature at AS - I'm going to drop History. However I'm not sure if I should talk about English Lit and History in my personal statement and if I do how should I include it? Also, do you have any advice about whether it's worth me taking up Chemistry AS next year to show dedication to the course etc? Thankyou!

Re: Personal Statement Help Question ThreadYou don't have to talk about them at all - you don't have to justify all your a level choices(Original post by miss_spell)

Re: Personal StatementHi!(Original post by Good bloke)
Read my profile and the wiki. Start off by telling them why you want to study the subject (and ignore the other subjects you mentioned if you are applying for dentistry).
I am Malik Sajwani and I have an enquiry which I have difficulty finding on UCAS Website.
My Choices for courses are:
LSE: BSc. in Actuarial Sciences
LSE: Economics
City: BSc. in Actuarial Sciences
UCL: Economics
Cambridge: Economics
My Question is how can I make one Personal Statement using these courses?
I contacted LSE about it and they said both are different courses so youmight get rejected.
What should I do?
Thanks -
Re: Personal Statement Help Question ThreadTake their advice and only apply for one of those two courses(Original post by maliksajwani)

Economics and actuarial science are very different and you won't be able to write a statement that is good for both of them. At some point you will have to choose which course to study, better to do so before you apply.

Re: Personal Statement Help Question ThreadAnd can we submit a seperate personal statement to unis in personal?(Original post by Potally_Tissed)

Re: Personal Statement Help Question ThreadYou can ask if they will accept a second personal statement. They don't have to consider it though, and they will still be able to see your original statement, so the problem of not looking committed to a particular course isn't completely removed.(Original post by maliksajwani)
And can we submit a seperate personal statement to unis in personal?
Thanks! -
Re: Personal StatementI agree with everything Potally_Tissed has told you already. Make a choice between the two subjects before applying. LSE will see you are applying for two different subjects and may not be too impressed at your lack of ability to make your mind up.(Original post by maliksajwani)

Re: Personal Statement Help Question Thread
As everyone above has said it's best to apply for just 1 of the 2 LSE options.
If you are undecided you can wait - apply for Cambridge and UCL for Econ by the 15th Oct deadline and leave your other 3 choices blank.
Then when you decide add the extra choices - and if those choices are for Actuarial Science then contact the universities directly and ask if they will accept an individual PS as you've changed your mind about your subject since applying.
LSE used to operate a closed field for admissions - ie they didn't make any decisions until after the Jan 15th deadline. I'm not sure if this is still the case but it does mean you can give yourself a good 3+ months to decide which courses and universities to apply to without missing the Cambridge deadline. -
Re: Personal Statement Help Question Thread
Hi, I was thinking of applying for 1 psychology course, 1 psychology and biology course and 3 biology courses. Do you think it would be that difficult to write a personal statement that can apply to all? I thought it wouldn't be too difficult as the subjects are related, but my careers advisor told me that I should just pick one subject.

Re: Personal Statement Help Question ThreadYou can write about them separately, but it would be a good idea to link them together, as there may well be modules that overlap/writing a dissertation to encompass both(Original post by pink pineapple)
I'm applying for joint honours history and French, would I write about the two subjects separately instead of combining them?
Your careers advisor is right. Choose one. You will have to choose eventually(Original post by roflcakes1)

It might help to write a PS for psychology and one for biology. That should help you get your thoughts in order about why you want to study each - and you might manage to find a common factor that *could* make a reasonable PS for both (but don't count on it) -
Re: Personal Statement Help Question ThreadWrite A statement focused on biology and maybe a paragraph on Psychology and how it links to bio - for the 4 Courses.(Original post by roflcakes1)

Then email the admissions department of the uni that you are apply to for pure Psych a personal statement focused on Psychology.
Which Uni are you thinking of applying for straight psych to? -
Re: Personal Statement Help Question Thread
:O no :O they cant make a personal statement thread for 2013 :O that means its *really happening!!!!!*
ok so i have a lil question. these are my options: (yes i know there are 6, i am deciding between reading and royal holloway at the moment)
bucks uni - psychology
royal holloway - psychology
plymouth - psychology
hull - psychology WITH philosophy
Keele - psychology AND philosophy
Reading - psychology AND philosophy
so... how am i supposed to make things relevant.
i mean for psychology unis, they want 100% psycho
for psycho AND philosophy, 50/50
psychology WITH philosophy, 75/25
so how am i supposed to make an equal balance :/
before you ask, sadly no i cant get rid of the just psychology places. i love those unis and they hold quite alot of benefits in going there (then saying that, Keele is reaching to the top of my preferred list
)
any help?
p.s has anyone started their drafts of the PS? -

Re: Personal Statement Help Question ThreadAnd the other option of getting rid of the psychology + philosophy options? You could look into whether or not universities will let you do electives and take up philosophy modules in your psychology degree. If you wanted to, you could look up Scottish universities who provide a very flexible degree system. Other than that, there is no real answer we can give you on how to 'balance' your personal statement. You're going to have to decide at some point which course you're going to do, so why not decide now and apply for all the same courses?(Original post by megfashion)

Re: Personal Statement Help Question Threadwell id love to do psychology with/and philosophy... the thing with bucks and royal holloway is that it is very near some very sick relatives (i wont say where i live of course!) and royal holloway i just LOVE. its a long shot to go there though :/(Original post by Ecosse_14)

i couldnt really see many other psychology with/and philosophy courses... im at a BBC standard you see.
i think keele is an elective system
edit: sorry forgot to say, bout the deciding part.. i would have to decide quite close to the deadline. im really looking at Keele and Hull, but maybe plymouth (dont have to decide yet!). but come the deadline to decide, if it looks as if grandparents aren't going to survive that long (eh. depressing.) then i would be choosing somewhere like bucks uni or royal hollowayLast edited by megfashion; 01-08-2012 at 22:36. -

Re: Personal Statement Help Question ThreadAccording to Hull's website, their offer for psych and phil is typically 280pts. They are generally low for straight psych too. MMU is 300pts. That was from a quick google search(Original post by megfashion)

Re: Personal Statement Help Question Threadohh right ok. hmm i shall look into it.(Original post by *Interrobang*)
Manchester met uni
---
also another thing... heh... well i have quite bad anxiety, which may be the reason for this irrational thought...
see im so so worried that my personal statement will seem to be a copy of someone elses.
im not going to copy, in fact if i see something i like i always think "time to think of something better" :P
but im rather worried that im going to write a sentence that *so happens* to look like someone elses.
for example.. if i say "i have an extreme desire for psychology and hope to persue into clinical psychology"
what if someone writes exactly the same thing? and then UCAS will say that we have copied each other?
:/
