Default Work XP for Internships?

Do you need relevant work experience to be considered for summer internships at most investment banks?

If so what type of experience are they looking for?

Thanks

i guess it would help wouldnt it? and no you don't 'need' it Isuppose. but it shows that you have aninterest in investment banking if you've been bothered to go out and look for work experience instead of bumming around like everyone else.

i'd say, any work experience is better than no work experience. so do as much as you can. if its relevant, then great. if not, then its better than doing nothing.

Thanks for the replies, im just about to start my degree but i appreciate that you need to do alot of research if you are serious for applying to internships. Its good to know that is isnt 'needed' but of course i will try and get some experience maybe during this coming summer. Does anyone know if regular high street banks are ever willing to give students some experience in a banking environment for just a summer job?

I find that most banks are using Word 2000.

you still have a year to go before you are even applying for internships. A bit early to be thinking of post uni jobs before you even started uni...your perspectives may change many times during university.
Another piece of advice - many banks now actively use Spring internships as platforms for recruiting for summer. So have a look into applying for those. But honestly, I had pretty much 0 relevant experience (aside from 1 week 'work experience' during 6th form) and still managed to get onto an internship in FO

I have worked in admin for Nationwide for the last 18 months (I was 16 when I applied), so the answer to your question is yes. They had loads of students there on summer work
